Xmas day
Hello our family is stopping for a night on Xmas day. We plan to take the Star ferry and the number 15 bus to Victoria Peak. Does anyone know if the buses and ferry are still running on xmas day and whether there is a reduced timetable? Have tried to find the info - with no luck. Also will most of the shopping malls and cafe restaurants still be open(staying in Kowloon)? Just after cheap good food, nothing fancy! Thanks
In Hong Kong, Christmas Day is a public holiday, but most public transport services, shops, and restaurants remain operational, though there may be minor adjustments to schedules. Here’s a detailed breakdown:
Public Transportation:
- Star Ferry: The Star Ferry operates on Christmas Day as usual, connecting Tsim Sha Tsui and Central. There may be slightly fewer departures than on a typical weekday, but the reduction is minor, and ferries run frequently throughout the day.
- Bus No. 15 to Victoria Peak: The Peak Tram is the usual choice for reaching Victoria Peak, but if you plan to take the bus, buses generally run on a normal schedule on public holidays. Expect some minor schedule adjustments, but services are maintained for tourists and locals.
- MTR (subway): MTR trains run on a regular weekday schedule, so you can use it to reach ferry terminals or other parts of the city without issue.
Shopping Malls and Restaurants:
- Major shopping malls in Kowloon, such as Harbour City, Elements, Langham Place, and Mira Place, are open on Christmas Day. Operating hours may be slightly shorter than normal, typically around 10:00–22:00.
- Cafes, fast-food outlets, and local eateries remain open, especially in busy areas like Tsim Sha Tsui and Mong Kok. For cheap and good local food, you can explore street food, dai pai dong (open-air food stalls), or small local restaurants, which usually operate even on public holidays.
- Some specialty shops and less central stores may close, but the majority of restaurants and food courts in malls will be open.
Additional Tips:
- Arrive at the Star Ferry and Peak bus stops a little early, as they may be busier with tourists enjoying the holiday.
- If you plan to eat at popular local spots or small eateries, lunchtime can be crowded, so be flexible with timing.
- Christmas Day in Hong Kong is generally festive, with many malls and streets decorated with lights, so it’s a good day for sightseeing and photos.
In summary, you can comfortably take the Star Ferry and bus on Christmas Day, and most shopping malls and local restaurants will be open. Expect minor schedule adjustments and slightly busier crowds, but the city remains lively and functional for tourists.
