The Chiayi National Palace Museum Southern Branch, located in Taibao City, Chiayi County, Taiwan, is a branch of the National Palace Museum, dedicated to promoting balanced cultural development between northern and southern Taiwan. Construction was approved by the Executive Yuan on December 31, 2004, and construction began on February 6, 2008. The groundbreaking ceremony was presided over by then-President Ma Ying-jeou on February 6, 2013. Trial operations began on December 28, 2015, and the building officially opened to the public on April 15, 2016. The approximately 70-hectare building encompasses the main exhibition hall, an artificial lake, and a tropical garden. Its architectural design blends Chinese and Western elements, showcasing precious artifacts from the National Palace Museum, including ancient Chinese art and international loans. Special exhibitions are also held, making it a cultural landmark in southern Taiwan. In 2017, a Muslim prayer room was added to the building, making it the first museum in Taiwan to offer such a facility, serving a diverse community. The museum is divided into permanent and special exhibition areas. The permanent exhibition showcases Asian textiles, ceramics, and national treasures, while the special exhibition area hosts occasional themed exhibitions. The special exhibition, "The Beauty of the Edo Floating World," is currently on view from May 30 to August 31, 2025, in Hall S101 on the first floor. This exhibition explores the art and life of Japanese society during the Edo period (1603-1868). It features approximately 100 rare and valuable items from domestic and international collections, including folding screens, handscrolls, prints, and picture books. The exhibition is divided into four sections: "Riverside Splendor" showcases riverside urban life; "City Times" depicts everyday life; "The Joy of Travel" showcases tourist attractions; and "Cross-Border Exchange" explores cultural exchange. It is suitable for visitors interested in Japanese culture.
