Visit the volcanic crater in Noboribetsu, Hokkaido

Noboribetsu's 'Hell Valley' is a volcanic crater formed by the eruption of Mount Hiyoriyama, and it remains active to this day. It serves as one of the main sources of Noboribetsu's hot springs, with a significant daily output. The sight of the hot spring outlets and steam vents, with white smoke billowing, is reminiscent of a scene from hell!

The area features walking trails that allow visitors to get up close to the bubbling springs and steam vents. The trails are not very long, but since we were on a guided tour and the guide only allocated 30 minutes, we didn't make it to the very end and had to turn back.
