Summer Trip to Three Cities—Wuhan, Chongqing, and Kunming

  • Number of days: 11 days
  • Time: July
  • Average cost: 5,000 yuan
  • With whom:parents and children

Preface—Let's Go!

2024, summer vacation.

July and August are Shenzhen's traditionally sweltering summer months, with scorching sun and oppressive heat. Typhoons of all sizes occasionally arrive, bringing with them torrential rain and no cool breeze. Super Typhoon Gemi is already on its way.

It's summer vacation, and since freshman year summer vacation is the first and only full, relaxing summer break during high school, I figured I'd take a stroll and explore the beautiful landscape of our motherland while the weather's still good.

Shenzhen - Wuhan - Chongqing - Kunming - Shenzhen

The total trip took eleven days, excluding the one day spent on high-speed rail, for an average of three and a half days per city. Just like Chongqing tour guide Liu said, he once led a Taiwanese group on an in-depth tour of Chongqing, and they still hadn't finished after thirteen days. The Taiwanese friends were a little frustrated. After all, Chongqing is more than twice the size of Taiwan. They probably didn't do their research well. Those mountaintop friends in Japan who clamored to travel all of China in three months clearly didn't do their research well either.

Anyway, these are all big cities, either provincial capitals or municipalities. Visiting them all in three or four days is definitely unrealistic; you can only take a small portion.

A few things to keep in mind during the trip:

1. I'm afraid of heights, so I took the high-speed rail the entire way, with two sections taking about five hours and the other two about seven hours. While slower than flying, it's smoother and more punctual, and you can enjoy the scenery up close. Buy your high-speed rail tickets as early as possible. If you cancel, the loss isn't too big. My experience is that even-numbered windows have better views than odd-numbered windows.

2. Study the city map first, get a general idea of the directions, and pick a few destinations you want to visit that are conveniently located. Choose a hotel nearby. The night before your high-speed rail trip, book a hotel near the station, ideally within walking distance. This time, I chose the Atour Hotel for the entire trip. Its advantages are its ideal location, nice decor, safe and clean feel, excellent service, and a useful washer and dryer (important!).

3. While I've researched the subway and Citybus, I usually use Didi Express. Fares are generally around 10 or 20 yuan, with the highest being just over 50 yuan.

1. Jianghan Customs Museum

We arrived in Wuhan at noon, the sun high in the sky. Our first stop after lunch was the Jianghan Customs Museum. If the Yellow Crane Tower is the center point, the Jianghan Customs Museum is not far northwest, near the confluence of the Han and Yangtze Rivers. It was once a concession for foreign powers. The museum building itself is the former Jianghan Customs Commissioner's Building.

Foreigners controlled import and export tariffs, making decisions while Chinese people worked, resulting in unequal pay for equal work. The museum features a complete reconstruction of customs declaration and tax filing, and the process is largely similar to today.

2. The Memorial Hall of the 1911 Revolution and the Former Site of the Hubei Military Governor's Office

These are actually the North and South Halls of the same place, located next to the Yellow Crane Tower. The Memorial Hall of the 1911 Revolution is the South Hall, a large indoor museum. There are free guided tours by museum guides at 9:30 and 10:30 a.m., which are worth a visit.

The Former Site of the Hubei Military Governor's Office is located to the north, across the street from the South Hall. It's not very large. Wuhan was a key location in the modern revolution, so if you're interested in this area, it's worth a visit.

If you're not taking the postgraduate entrance exam, half a day will suffice for both museums.

3. Yellow Crane Tower

This is probably a must-see for tourists visiting Wuhan. You need to buy a ticket; daytime tickets must enter before 5:00 PM, and the area clears at 6:00 PM. Evening tickets include a light show.

I think calling it Yellow Crane Tower Park might be easier to imagine, but the main scenic area is Snake Mountain and the Yellow Crane Tower. The mountain in the plains is naturally a dirt slope. Although low, it was more than enough for building a sentry tower, thanks to the wide view. Of course, the earliest sentry towers weren't as tall or as artistic as they are today. Over the years, the sentry towers were destroyed and rebuilt, becoming increasingly famous. The current appearance resembles a Qing Dynasty version.

The building has two staircases, one going up and the other down. Each level you ascend completes a circuit, and the view from the top floor is quite impressive. To the west and north, you can see the mighty Yangtze River circling the city. To the west, you can see several cross-river bridges, with a constant stream of traffic and ships on the river. The setting sun, reflecting off the clouds, falls on the river. Even with the effort of opening your eyes, you can see the shimmering golden and silver light. Looking out in all directions at the Yellow Crane Tower, you can see tall buildings in a variety of shapes, giving you a natural sense of Wuhan's prosperity. It's truly a scenic spot.

I didn't get to see the evening light show up close, but you can watch it from a distance for free.

How far is it? About a few hundred meters. Take Line 5, Simenkou Yellow Crane Tower Station, Exit C. Not far away is the internet-famous "red wall." Behind it is a spacious parking lot. Just look up and you'll see the tower. In the afternoon, I was looking in this direction from upstairs and saw a large group of people gathered. I thought something was happening. In the evening, I ran here by myself. The angle for viewing the night view of the Yellow Crane Tower from a distance was really good.

4. Hubei Provincial Museum

This is also a great place. It's best to hire a guide.

Many museums have their own design, and the Hubei Provincial Museum is no exception.

If I had to make a general summary, I think the Hubei Provincial Museum is mainly about the Sword of Goujian, King of Yue, and the artifacts from the Tomb of Marquis Yi of Zeng. There are so many interesting things there, and even a three-hour guided tour is a quick slog. For an average person like me, my legs get tired quickly, and for a museum enthusiast, that's never enough time. At least half a day is enough.

There is a chime concert hall. You need to buy a ticket for the day at 8 o'clock every morning, which costs 50. The whole performance takes half an hour. Of course, the music has long been lost. This is a letter of repentance from a certain king after he killed his favorite general, similar to how a Chinese parent scolds a child and then calls him to eat after realizing he was wrong.

Main entrance of Hubei Provincial Museum The Sword of Goujian, King of Yue, is well preserved. The thousand-year-old salted fish actually exists, Stephen Chow is not lying to me. At that time, officials had to insert a hair into the top of their hats. Zeng Hou Yi's restored imaginary head portrait. The bones are currently in the laboratory, soaking with his buried slaves, hand in hand, shoulder to shoulder Chime bell instruction manual The famous Zenghouyi chime bells The thing that Zhang Yi arranged for a bunch of handsome men to play at the 2008 Olympic opening ceremony A chime bell performance, the last piece was "The East is Red" ... 5. Wuhan University

This is the dream university for so many students! I only regret that I was so ignorant when I was young, and I used time like a tissue. Many universities have night markets next to them, but Wuhan University has Jin… and East Lake.

Peach and Plum Blossoms on the Wuhan University Campus

Summary

This is my second time in Wuhan. The first time was during the cherry blossom season this year. As I got off the high-speed train, I saw several pink cherry trees by the station gate and tried hard to suppress the urge to run over for a photo, fearing I'd reveal my true colors.

At that time of year, there were cherry blossoms around the Yellow Crane Tower, around the Hubei Military Governor's Office, and all over Wuhan University's Cherry Blossom Avenue. And the cherry garden at East Lake should be called a sea of cherry blossoms.

Spring daylight isn't as intense and long as summer's. Looking west from the Yellow Crane Tower around 6 p.m., you'll experience a more intense, ancient charm worth savoring.

Unlike Shenzhen, which is narrow and mountainous, Wuhan boasts a flat terrain and expansive views. Wuhan is roughly four times the size of Shenzhen, with its square shape. At night, hailing a taxi and navigating the bridges along the two rivers and three banks is quite a sight. The Yangtze River Bridge is walkable, and walking to the middle to see the collective light show of the city's skyscrapers is also quite stunning.

Wuhan in late summer—as the tour guide said, "Those who visit Wuhan at this time are truly in love." The Hubei Provincial Museum and the tour guide's explanations were both excellent, and I gained a lot of new insights. If I had to make a wish, I'd like to return next year during the cherry blossom season. If I had to specify a specific time, I'd like it to be before a heavy rain, ideally with Dong Yuhui.

1. Three Gorges Museum

We hired a tour guide, but he asked us to call him teacher. Later I learned that it is popular in Chongqing to call others teacher. As the old saying goes, when three people walk together, there must be three teachers. I felt a little embarrassed to call and be called teacher, but I got used to it after a while. After all, teachers can be found everywhere, but not all of them are truly virtuous and talented.

The Three Gorges Museum's design, as is customary, is meticulously crafted. It's modeled after the Three Gorges Dam, with the exterior glass symbolizing the river. Facing the grand entrance is the magnificent Chongqing People's Auditorium. This old building, supposedly modeled after ancient Chinese architecture, feels like the honeymoon period between China and the Soviet Union during the founding of the People's Republic of China.

The auditorium's circular shape represents the sun, while the Three Gorges Museum's curved shape represents the moon. The two complement each other, forming the Chinese character "Ming," symbolizing the struggle to resist the Qing and restore the Ming Dynasty. Please ignore this.

Chongqing undoubtedly holds countless historical and cultural stories, as well as modern and contemporary ones. These stories are passed down orally today, as well as silently conveyed through antique artifacts, archival photographs, and other sources. Like other historic settlements, one can easily connect with the people who have lived and breathed this land, both past and present, and naturally marvel at their hardships, not only in modern history, but also at the courage and resolve with which they fought. If the Wuchang Uprising fired the first shot, then Sichuan and Chongqing were the lion's roar that preceded it. Whether that shot, that roar, was epoch-making is the responsibility of future generations to shape it, not define it.

2. The Site of the June 5th Tunnel Massacre

A small museum located just off Jiefangbei Pedestrian Street. The museum itself takes just over half an hour to walk through, but if the incident lingers, the blame will inevitably be placed on the small life. But looking back at the entire incident, could we have done better then? Are we doing better now?

3. Jianchuan Museum

A very large museum.

Or it can be said to be the old site of Hanyang Arsenal in Chongqing. A mountain was hollowed out on the bank of the Yangtze River, and the entire Hanyang Arsenal in Wuhan was moved in. Now it is several theme museums connected together, like the nine-square grid of Chongqing hot pot. It is also some distance away from Chaotianmen. If you are not a lover of history and museums, forget it. But if you are, please rest your legs and feet, prepare food and drink, and spend a whole day out.

4. Jiefangbei Pedestrian Street and Eighteen Ladders

A must-see for tourists of all kinds. It's important to note that the area surrounding Jiefangbei corresponds to the blast radius of the air-dropped bomb. In comparison, the Nagasaki Atomic Bomb Memorial Museum is rather stingy. They only mark the location of the Fat Man. Shouldn't they also include the Fat Man's blast radius?

The pedestrian street is always crowded with people, mainly for snacks and shopping, so of course you don't have a full meal when you go there.

The Eighteen Ladders is near the pedestrian street and is also a unique place worth seeing. The history of the Eighteen Ladders is both inspiring and tragic. It is most interesting to experience it in person, so I will not elaborate on it. In terms of terrain, the area above the Eighteen Ladders is considered a mountain.

Hello Chongqing Jiefangbei and Eighteen Ladders People's Liberation Monument Jiefangbei Pedestrian Street Jiefangbei Pedestrian Street Jiefangbei Pedestrian Street Jiefangbei Pedestrian Street Eighteen Ladders Eighteen Ladders UpperWhen talking about Chongqing, Chaotianmen Square is a must-see. And when you're at Chaotianmen Square, you can't avoid the landmark Raffles City, located nearby. Its imposing appearance immediately evokes memories of Singapore. Sure enough, its owner is Temasek.

From the pointed corner of Chaotianmen Square, you can take in the magnificent view of the confluence of the Jialing and Yangtze Rivers. Across the river to the right is a vast residential complex in the Nan'an District, built along the river and the mountainside in a distinct and well-organized pattern. Across the river to the left are the office buildings and theater complex of the Jiangbei District, embodying the grandeur of a bustling metropolis. Take the elevator to the 5th-floor platform of Raffles City, where you can walk to the Sky Garden, which offers a panoramic view of Chaotianmen Square and a truly breathtaking view.

From Chaotianmen, take Line 1, one stop to Xiaoshizi Station, then transfer to Line 6 and one stop across the Jialing River Bridge at Qiansimen to the Grand Theater Station. From there, you can admire the magnificent Chaotianmen architectural complex across the river. I think it's no less stunning than Pudong, and even more visually stunning. It's stunning both during the day and at night when the lights are on. The Hongyadong Cave under the bridge turns on its lights at 8 p.m. sharp.

As a Shenzhen native accustomed to seeing lights, don't ask me why I'm willing to squeeze in with the crowds on the other side of the road for half an hour just to see the lights on in Hongyadong. I don't understand either.

6. Baigongguan and Zhazidong

Baigongguan and Zhazidong are located in Shapingba, a little further along the way past Southwest University of Political Science and Law and Sichuan International Studies University. While it's far from Chaotianmen (of course), it's not far from Chongqing West High-Speed Railway Station, so it's worth visiting the day before you leave Chongqing and change hotels. I hired a tour guide.

Baigongguan and Zhazidong are not far from each other, and there's a scenic bus service that goes back and forth for 20 yuan per person. Each has its own story, but their functions were the same at the time; the only difference is the classification. It's said that the March of the Volunteers originated here. I won't go into the rest. DDDD.

Passing by the old place, it is said that they all went to the new campus in Yubei Another version Southwest Associated University, see you at the next stop. Iconic window panes

Summary

This is my second time in Chongqing, but the last time was over 20 years ago, when the Three Gorges still hadn't transformed. I was on a plane, and when I heard the announcement that we were almost there, I looked down and saw the small but incredibly iconic Chaotianmen Gate. I had a sinful, inappropriate thought: how high-ranking Kuomintang officials viewed Chaotianmen Gate, and how ordinary bombers viewed it. What a sin.

Over the past 20 years, the nation's hardware and software have undergone tremendous changes, and so has Chongqing. There are also things that remain unchanged, like the incredibly spicy hot pot, which is beyond my liking but I can't stop eating. Really. Delicious. Ah. Of course, I also had some street noodles this time, a very good bowl.

On Jiefangbei Pedestrian Street, try the shiitake mushroom and shrimp balls. The baby potatoes are also okay, and the orange cake is great. Zhe Er Gen (Chinese water chestnut)? What the heck.

Didi cars zip around the city, and drivers rant and rave about everything. They complain about how Chongqing residents are busier than Chengdu residents but earn less than Chengdu residents. They complain that while housing prices haven't skyrocketed, the city's infrastructure has left the government with no money. They complain about how Chengdu residents start playing mahjong much earlier each day. There's also someone who claims to have achieved financial freedom and returned to Chongqing to enjoy life. He drives Didi during the day to stay connected to society, and at night, he quits his business to write a book to explore his inner self. I really don't want to ask what book he's writing. Fortunately, we've arrived. Why would he need a five-star review when he's already financially free?

Will he write about us tonight?

Probably not. Chongqing has plenty of it. It's even too vibrant and full of stories—there's no way I'd ever write about it all.

By the way, can you imagine how big Chongqing is? 40 Shenzhens. Adding Kunming would make it as big as the Republic of Korea.

The Three Gorges Museum is familiar to me. The Eighteen Ladders is locked up. Kunming

1. Former Site of Southwest Associated University

The first destination in Kunming is the Southwest Associated University Museum.

It's located on the campus of Yunnan Normal University. After the victory of the Anti-Japanese War, Southwest Associated University moved back to its original location, and Yunnan Normal University was established on this site.

It's free, and reservations must be made a week in advance. There are guided tours at 10:30 PM and 3:30 PM, and both sessions are usually sold out on the day they're released.

But it's really unnecessary; it's not because there's so little to see that a guided tour isn't necessary. On the contrary, the content was far richer than I had imagined, and there was no need to rush for a special guided tour, as groups from outside the school kept arriving. Once you made an appointment and entered the school, no one cared where you were. You could wait for a guided tour or join in on the guided tours.

For anyone interested in this period of history, this is definitely worth a visit. It's informative and takes up most of the day.

2. Haigeng Park

Kunming may be a modern city, but its history as a settlement is rich, and it was built on the shores of Dianchi Lake.

Dianchi Lake is said to have a circumference of 120 kilometers, flanked by Xishan Mountain on one side. Several parks have been built around the lake, including Haigeng Park, which is relatively close to the city center.

Dianchi Lake truly feels like an ocean, while Xishan Mountain rises like a massive wall on the opposite bank. It's not particularly tall, but its imposing form and rugged texture create a sense of imposing power.

The south and west sides of Haigeng Park face the lake, each featuring a scenic trail along the lake, about one or two kilometers long. The two trails meet at the southwest corner of the park, marking the end of the Xishan Cableway. The starting point is on Xishan Mountain, far across the lake, but I'm afraid of heights, so I didn't have the time. The scenery along the southern route is beautiful, but time constraints prevented me from catching the sunset on the western trail, a regret I'll have to make up for next time.

3. Golden Horse and Jade Rooster Square

The old place, surrounded by the sea and the mulberry fields, remains unchanged. There is nothing to go around, but to commemorate our reunion. It is possible to visit Nanping Pedestrian Street at night, but Kunming people are not like Chongqing people, who are more health-conscious, and they close at ten o'clock.

4. Yunnan Provincial Museum

A tour guide is needed, and it takes half a day. The cultural and creative store gets off work on time at five o'clock, and no one is allowed in no matter what. There is definitely no KPI pressure.

The tour guide said something very interesting: Looking at the cultural relics of ancient people’s lives, it is nothing more than “what they ate, what they used to eat.”

The things in the museum are indeed quite good. The political science of this land in ancient times was not very good, and the industrial production was not very good. However, the skill of shaping bronze figures is very good. It is very good.

At five o'clock in the afternoon, it was still bright and the museum was busy.

Forget it, I have changed my hotel to one near the high-speed rail station that day. I set off from Greater Shenzhen ten days ago, and now I will stay one night before returning to Little Shenzhen. Three people traveled and four people returned. Lazy and extravagant, I sent two suitcases to SF Express for bulk shipments, and carried a backpack on my own and boarded the high-speed train empty-handed.

Summary

Coincidentally, this is my second time coming to Kunming. The last time was 18 years ago, and now I am here again. Everything is fine, and I have gained 40 kilograms of meat.

The biggest feeling when you get out of Kunming Station is that it is cool, comfortable and breezy. It feels like you are coming out of a boiler or a hot pool.

Kunming is not small, with 11 Shenzhens.

Currently, Kunming's urban construction is developing towards the south. The old urban area in the north is Puna, and the new urban area in the south is 30 kilometers apart. The roads are wide and the buildings are new. The city government is here, the high-speed rail station is here, and the university town is here. People, let’s keep going. The rate of turning on lights at night is not too low at first glance.

The commercial center, tourism, and food consumption are of course concentrated in the old city center in the north.

Specially talk about mushroom hotpot. It's about one chicken with about 2 pounds of various mushrooms. It's still delicious! They don't give you chopsticks before it's cooked, saying they're afraid you'll mess up your words. When the food is cooked and the pot is boiling, they take a small bowl with a small spoon and put your phone number on it, saying that they can get back to you if something goes wrong.

Postscript - Back to Shenzhen!

Arriving home, opening the door and entering the house, the eleven-day summer vacation trip to two provinces and three cities came to a perfect end.

As soon as the door opened, the two cats became excited. The white cat came from a cattery and was so generous that everyone liked it. The yellow cat is a grassroots big orange. When there are no outsiders, it is domineering and invincible. When there are outsiders, haha, so most guests think that we are a one-cat family. But when the door opened, the yellow cat stood up and didn't hide. After confirming it, he quickly came forward with a milky voice. Who says cats don’t recognize people?

Recalling the journey from Wuhan to Chongqing and Kunming, I thanked God for the good weather. People stayed indoors when the sun was shining, and it rarely rained. I paid attention to the weather conditions in other provinces and cities around me on the way, but there were typhoons, storms, and floods.

Secondly, I was pleasantly surprised to find that the three cities are so inextricably linked, regardless of natural formation, ancient culture or modern history. When I stood on the Yellow Crane Tower and watched the Yangtze River converge with the Han River from the west, and then flow eastward around the city of Wuhan, history molded the entire Yangtze River Delta region in the middle and lower reaches of the Yangtze River. Going west from Wuhan, passing through the unrippled Jianghan Plain to Yichang, it seemed as if the gate to a mountain was gradually opening in front of us, and the train began to climb continuously and drill into caves. Suddenly, I came out of the tunnel, and my eyes were filled with mountains, canyons and streams, and my heart was filled with admiration.

Chongqing deserves its reputation as a mountain city. Who would have thought that the current Sichuan-Chongqing Basin was an ocean in ancient times, while the Jianghan Plain was actually a highland, and the water flow originally ran from east to west?

Due to the rising water in the upper reaches, the night boat cruises in Wuhan and Chongqing were not possible, but the river scenery was not bad. Although the river water is turbid, it doesn't matter if the two rivers are the same color when standing in Chaotianmen Square. I also watched the two rivers rushing together here, breaking through Wushan and falling straight to the plains. Thousands of troops and horses ran through central China, like an oversized teapot. Imagine the characters going down the river from west to east and upstream from east to west. Qian Mu wrote in "On the Capital" that China's terrain is high in the northwest and low in the southeast. The capital was established in Nanjing, although it was comfortable, but there was no fighting spirit to fight. The capital was set in Xi'an, although it was difficult, but the people had the spirit to stand up. Liu Bei went down the river and suffered a major defeat, and the Southern Song Dynasty broke through the defenses of Dali and fell. During the Anti-Japanese War, soldiers and civilians traveled against the Yangtze River, which eventually dragged their lives to death. The historical facts of the Long March are as grand as the Southwest Associated University, and as subtle as Yao Mulan's family following the country in Lin Yutang's novel, which is both evocative and touching.

Can the Yangtze River break through Wushan without the help of the Jialing River? If the ancient Yangtze River changed its course, how would the history of this land be rewritten?

People walking together should be like two rivers.

This high-speed rail trip passes through Guangdong, Hunan, Hubei, Chongqing, Guizhou, Yunnan and Guangxi. Hubei is in the plains and has obviously different terrain. Although the rest are all mountainous, there are obvious differences among them if you look closely, which is very interesting.

On the other hand, although the high-speed train is smooth, comfortable and has beautiful scenery, there are still many troubles, such as unscrupulous loud driving, children kicking the backrest and playing with small tables, running and chasing with loud shouts, or eating odorous food. The toilet may even be clogged due to improper use, causing the entire carriage to be filled with a strong smell of feces and urine. Of course, I also carefully reflected on myself. Should I not complain about the lack of refinement of high-speed rail services and poor management of low-quality behaviors? Instead, I should think about why I care so much about these cute little problems that are so down-to-earth. The people are simple and innocent, good and bad. I must be sick. I don’t have the life of a capitalist, but I have a petty bourgeois disease. I must change it.
