Is 1 hour 45 minutes transit time enough to change flights?

I am flying from Toronto to Mumbai by Cathay and have a 1 hour 45 minutes layover in Hong Kong. Both my flights are Cathay Pacific. Is that enough time to get off the first flight and board the next flight? I am asking because last time I had a 2 hour layover in London and was not able to catch the connecting flight, as they were at different terminals and I had go to through security again at the 2nd terminal. This is my first time flying through Hong Kong and not sure about gates or terminals.

A 1 hour 45 minute layover at Hong Kong International Airport (HKG) is generally sufficient for a connecting flight if both flights are on Cathay Pacific, as this is considered a same-airline connection. HKG is a single-terminal airport (Terminal 1) with efficient transfer procedures, so you won’t need to switch terminals.

Key points to consider:

  • If your flights are on the same booking reference, your baggage will usually be checked through to Mumbai, so you do not need to collect it during the layover.
  • You will go through security and possibly immigration depending on whether you need to enter Hong Kong or remain in the transit area. For same-airline international-to-international connections, you typically remain in the sterile transit zone.
  • Follow the transfer signs in the airport; HKG has clear English signage and staff are available to assist.
  • Consider walking times between gates — HKG is large, but Cathay Pacific gates are usually clustered, and airport shuttle trains are available for distant gates.

Tips for a smooth connection:

  • Check your boarding pass for the next flight; sometimes it can be issued in advance or at the first flight.
  • Move promptly from the arrival gate to your departure gate, but no need to rush excessively as 1 hour 45 minutes is usually enough.
  • If you feel concerned, alert cabin crew on your first flight; they can provide assistance or notify ground staff if you are short on time.

In conclusion, for same-airline flights at HKG, 1 hour 45 minutes is typically adequate. You should not need to leave the transit area or pass through immigration, and the single-terminal design makes the connection straightforward.
