Struggling to pick a hotel...
Hi,
Husband and wife (30s), we be in town for the TX Rangers series at the end of next month. Flying in and out of STL, 28-31 July. Not planning on renting a car, hoping with don't need to. We'll go to at least two of the baseball games, maybe all three. Would like to go up the Arch, I read the Zoo is free, go to Anheuser Busch Brewery, and other local sights. We like good food and breweries.
Can't pick a hotel though, looking for around $150 a night before taxes. Want to be able to walk to attractions and restaurants/bars. Free breakfast would be nice, but not a must.
I'm currently booked in the Magnolia Hotel on 8th Street, however for all hotels I look at reviews are very mixed, I try to avoid the 1 contribution reviews on TA. Not interested staying at one of the Drurys - like a more modern looking room, and sounds like too many kids.
What about the Hilton Pennywell, or Embassy Suites, I like the 21c but it's about $100 more for the entire stay. Hyatt Regency seems outdated. Hampton Inn, worn.
Please advise.
For your St. Louis trip focused on baseball games, sightseeing, and breweries, choosing a hotel that’s centrally located and walkable is key since you won’t have a car. Downtown St. Louis, especially near 8th Street and the Gateway Arch, is ideal because you can easily reach the Arch, Citygarden, restaurants, bars, and Union Station. The ballpark is also walkable from this area.
Here’s a breakdown of some of the hotels you mentioned and alternatives:
- Magnolia Hotel (8th Street): Stylish, modern boutique hotel in the heart of downtown. Reviews are generally positive, though some mixed feedback exists—likely due to individual preferences. Good for walkable access to attractions, restaurants, and nightlife.
- Hilton St. Louis at the Ballpark (Pennywell): Convenient for attending Cardinals games since it’s across from Busch Stadium. Modern enough, but some guests note it can feel busy during game days. Easy walk to downtown attractions as well.
- Embassy Suites Downtown: Offers spacious rooms and a free breakfast. Generally modern and clean, with good service. A short walk to the Arch and Citygarden. Could be slightly less “boutique” feel than Magnolia or 21c.
- 21c Museum Hotel: Very modern, stylish, and has a boutique art-focused experience. Slightly more expensive (as you noted), but offers unique ambiance, a restaurant on-site, and central location. Great if you want a memorable stay beyond just convenience.
- Hyatt Regency: Big hotel, central downtown, but some rooms are outdated. Good for location but less intimate or boutique style.
- Hampton Inn Downtown: Comfortable, reliable chain, but some rooms are worn. Good value if location and budget are priorities over style.
Other considerations and tips:
- Walkability: Staying near 8th Street, Market Street, or around the Gateway Arch ensures easy walking to the ballpark, restaurants, breweries, and attractions like the City Museum or Anheuser-Busch Brewery. You could also take a short rideshare if needed.
- Food and nightlife: Downtown offers a variety of restaurants and breweries within walking distance. For a mix of trendy and local options, Magnolia, 21c, and Embassy Suites locations are all advantageous.
- Game days: Hotels near Busch Stadium (Hilton, Magnolia, Hyatt) will have easy access but can be crowded during games. Booking early is recommended to secure rates and availability.
- Budget: Magnolia and Embassy Suites should fit closer to your $150/night target (before taxes). 21c is pricier but worth it for the boutique experience if your budget allows.
In summary, for a modern and stylish stay with easy access to your planned activities, the Magnolia Hotel is a solid choice if you prioritize boutique style and walkability. Hilton St. Louis at the Ballpark is convenient for the games, Embassy Suites offers space and breakfast, and 21c provides a unique boutique experience if the extra cost is acceptable. Given your preferences (modern, not too kid-heavy, walkable), Magnolia or 21c would likely give the best overall experience.
