Rental location 14 Place NE between F&G Streets
Hi, we've found a rental in the above location and was hoping someone familiar could comment on the area. It's a good price probably because it's faster out from the main tourist areas. I know it's about a 30 minute walk to union station, and we're fine taking uber to the mall/museums for sightseeing. However, curious if it's considered safe.
Thank you for any insight
The location you mentioned, 14th Place NE between F & G Streets in Washington DC, is in the Near Northeast neighborhood, close to the NoMa (North of Massachusetts Avenue) area. This is a residential and commercial zone that has been undergoing development in recent years, but it is outside the main tourist corridor near the National Mall.
Safety considerations:
- Generally, the area is considered moderately safe during the day, with local businesses and some residential activity.
- Evenings and nights can be quieter and less populated, so it’s advisable to be cautious when walking alone, especially on less trafficked streets.
- Like many urban areas, petty crime such as occasional theft can occur, so standard city precautions are recommended—lock doors, keep valuables secure, and stay aware of surroundings.
Transportation and accessibility:
- Union Station is roughly a 25–30 minute walk, or a very short Uber/Lyft ride, making access to Amtrak, Metro lines, and buses convenient.
- For sightseeing at the Mall and Smithsonian museums, Uber, Lyft, or Metro are practical options. The nearest Metro stations (NoMa-Gallaudet U on the Red Line) make downtown travel straightforward.
Pros and cons of staying in this location:
- Pros: Typically lower rental prices, more local and residential feel, easy access to Union Station and Red Line Metro.
- Cons: Farther from main tourist areas, limited dining and evening entertainment within immediate walking distance, less of the classic DC “tourist vibe.”
In summary, the area is reasonable for a stay if you are comfortable using rideshare or public transport for sightseeing. Daytime activity is fine, but it’s best to exercise typical urban caution, especially after dark.
