Should we try to include Antelope Canyon

We will be coming from Sedona and will have 1.5-2 days in the area at beginning of December. Should we try to squeeze in Antelope Canyon and Horseshoe bend before going to South Rim (either stay 1night in Page or both nights at South Rim). I’ve always been intrigued by Antelope, but I know December won’t have the light rays. Just wondering if it is wise to split and use time between both south rim and antelope in December or just save antelope for a different trip and just do south rim. We will be leaving area for Hoover Dam and Las Vegas afterwards.

Visiting Antelope Canyon and Horseshoe Bend in December is still possible, but it requires careful consideration given your limited time and the season. Here’s a detailed breakdown to help you decide whether to include them or focus solely on the Grand Canyon South Rim.

Considerations for December:

  • Light rays in Antelope Canyon are typically visible only in late spring through early fall, so in December you won’t see the dramatic light beams that make it famous.
  • Temperatures in Page can be chilly, especially in the mornings and evenings, with highs around 40–50°F (4–10°C) and lows below freezing. Trails are generally accessible, but water or ice could make some areas slippery.
  • Tour availability: Antelope Canyon requires a guided tour, and in December, tours may have limited availability. It’s essential to book in advance.
  • Driving distance: Sedona to Page is roughly 280 miles (4.5–5 hours) one way. Adding this detour will reduce the time you can spend at the South Rim unless you plan carefully.

Options to Consider:

  • Option 1 – Focus on South Rim only: Spend your 1.5–2 days fully exploring the South Rim. This allows you to enjoy multiple viewpoints, short hikes, and the visitor centers without feeling rushed. This is particularly wise in December when daylight is shorter.
  • Option 2 – Include Page/Antelope Canyon: Drive to Page, stay one night, and do Antelope Canyon and Horseshoe Bend the next morning. Then continue to the South Rim, potentially only seeing it briefly in the afternoon. This option gives you a broader experience but less time at the Grand Canyon.

Recommendation:

Given the time of year and the limited daylight in December, most travelers would benefit from focusing on the South Rim and leaving Antelope Canyon for a future trip. While Antelope Canyon is beautiful, you won’t experience the signature light beams in December, and the long drive from Sedona could make your schedule tight.

However, if your main interest is the slot canyon itself and Horseshoe Bend, and you are comfortable with driving and a fast-paced itinerary, a one-night stop in Page is feasible. Make sure to book Antelope Canyon tours in advance and check the timing carefully to avoid missing sunset or sunrise photo opportunities at the South Rim.
