Where to Stay for Holiday visit
Booked a WH Tour Dec 6 & want to see the Parade of Boats Dec 7 at The Wharf. Recommendations on where to stay for both ? I realize they are miles apart. What about AC in Capitol Hill/Navy Yard area ?
Also, do any of the hotels have free parking ?
TIA
For your holiday visit to Washington DC with a White House tour on December 6 and the Parade of Boats at The Wharf on December 7, choosing a centrally located hotel with easy access to both sites is key. Since these locations are on opposite ends of the downtown area, you will need to balance convenience for both events.
Suggested Areas to Stay:
- Capitol Hill / Navy Yard:
- Pros: Closer to The Wharf for the Parade of Boats and within a short Metro ride to the White House and National Mall. Safe and quieter residential feel compared to downtown.
- Cons: Slightly longer travel time to the White House (about 10–15 minutes via Metro or 20–25 minutes driving).
- Hotel Options: AC Hotel by Marriott, Hyatt House Washington DC/Navy Yard, The LINE DC (nearby). These offer modern amenities and good access to Metro stations.
- Parking: Most hotels in this area offer paid parking; free parking is rare downtown. You may find limited free street parking farther from the Metro.
- Downtown / Penn Quarter:
- Pros: Walking distance to the White House, museums, and dining. Ideal if the White House tour is a priority.
- Cons: Further from The Wharf (approximately 15–20 minutes drive), but still accessible by Metro or ride share.
- Hotel Options: Kimpton Hotel Monaco, Grand Hyatt DC, or Marriott Marquis. These are central, safe, and modern.
- Parking: Paid garages are common; a few hotels may have discounted parking packages but free parking is unlikely.
Practical Tips:
- If you plan to rely on public transportation, staying near a Metro station is critical. Navy Yard has the Waterfront and Navy Yard stations, which connect easily to the Yellow/Green Line to downtown for the White House.
- Consider using ride-share services for faster travel between the White House and The Wharf if you want to avoid transferring on the Metro with time constraints.
- Booking early is crucial in December as holiday events attract many visitors, limiting hotel availability.
- Check hotel websites for any parking packages or bundled deals—they often provide preferred rates or nearby parking discounts.
In summary, Capitol Hill/Navy Yard provides closer access to The Wharf and good Metro connections to the White House, while Downtown/Penn Quarter offers immediate access to the White House and central attractions but requires longer travel to The Wharf. Free parking is rare in either area, so plan accordingly.
