Midweek Mid December Parking at The Mall

We are thinking about coming down for an overnight mid week in mid December. Probably staying at The Madera. How bad will on street parking be at that time near The Mall? I usually have good parking karma, but is not perfect. Also, are there nearby public parking garages near The Madera Hotel (Dupont Circle). Their website states there are garages nearby, but doesn’t say how far. Thanks.

Visiting DC midweek in mid-December is generally a quieter time compared to weekends or holidays, but The Mall and Dupont Circle areas can still have busy streets, especially around museums and popular attractions. Street parking near The Mall itself is largely metered, with limits typically ranging from 2 to 4 hours. Meters are enforced Monday through Saturday, usually from 7 AM to 10 PM, and rates are approximately $2.30–$2.50 per hour. Since you are staying at The Madera in Dupont Circle, you’ll be a few miles from The Mall, so on-street parking in Dupont Circle tends to be challenging but manageable midweek.

Here are some considerations and options:

  • Street Parking Near The Madera: Dupont Circle streets have a mix of metered and residential permit parking. Metered spots can fill up quickly in the morning, but midday and afternoon often have more availability. Evening hours (after 10 PM) are free at meters.
  • Nearby Public Garages: There are several public parking garages within a few blocks of The Madera. Rates can vary from $20–$35 per day depending on the garage and duration. Options include:
    • Colonial Parking at 2020 Q St NW (~2–3 block walk)
    • SP+ Garage at 2115 P St NW (~3–4 blocks)
    • Additional smaller lots scattered throughout Dupont Circle
  • Alternative: If you plan to drive to The Mall directly, consider using one of the larger garages near Smithsonian museums, such as the Ronald Reagan Building garage or the National Gallery of Art garage. Both are paid, secure, and a short walk to the Mall.
  • Tips: Arrive early in the morning to secure street parking if you prefer that option. Consider using a parking app like ParkMobile or SpotHero to reserve garage spots in advance and avoid circling the area.

Overall, midweek in December is one of the easier times for parking in DC, but having a garage option nearby The Madera is a good backup to ensure convenience and peace of mind.
