Where to stay for one night in Hong Kong
Hello, we arrive into Hong Kong at 6pm on a Sunday and have a 8.45pm flight on the Monday (so need to be at the airport 530ish). I don’t know Hong Kong so don’t know what to see (don’t really want to shop) where is the best place to stay and how long does it take to get to and from the airport. I am happy to leave our luggage at the hotel to spend the day looking around.
For a short overnight stay in Hong Kong with a next-day evening flight, your main considerations should be convenience, proximity to transport links, and the ability to leave luggage at the hotel while exploring the city. Since you are not focused on shopping, staying in a central location with easy access to sightseeing and the airport is ideal.
Here are some options and tips:
- Kowloon – Tsim Sha Tsui / Hung Hom: This area is central, near the Star Ferry, Victoria Harbour promenade, and museums. You can enjoy short walks and city views. From Tsim Sha Tsui to the airport via the Airport Express, you can reach Hong Kong Station in about 24 minutes, plus a short taxi or MTR ride from your hotel.
- Hong Kong Island – Central / Admiralty: Central is close to iconic areas like the Peak Tram, Man Mo Temple, and Mid-Levels Escalators. Transport to the airport is straightforward via the Airport Express from Hong Kong Station. This area is good if you prefer a more urban, historical vibe.
- Near Airport – Tsing Yi / Tung Chung: If your priority is reducing travel stress for the flight, staying near the airport might make sense. Tung Chung has several hotels and is next to the Airport Express line, taking 6–8 minutes to the terminal. You can also visit Ngong Ping 360 and the Big Buddha nearby.
Additional advice:
- Check if your hotel offers luggage storage for early arrival or late departure. This is common in most Hong Kong hotels.
- Consider leaving the city by mid-afternoon to ensure you have plenty of time to get to the airport, clear security, and manage luggage.
- If you want to see highlights in limited time, Victoria Harbour, Star Ferry, Central district, and The Peak are the most iconic and can be done within a few hours.
- Taxi rides in HK are fast but can be affected by traffic; for airport transfers, the Airport Express is reliable and fast.
In summary, for one night with sightseeing and an evening departure, staying in Tsim Sha Tsui or Central provides a balance of convenience, sightseeing, and easy airport access. If minimizing airport stress is your main goal, Tung Chung or near Airport Express stations is a safe alternative.
