Lamma Island and Ma Wan questions

Good afternoon all,

this Sunday we'll be traveling to HK and we include Lamma Island and Ma Wan this time.

1. Is the ferry from Central to Ma Wan do depart every hour ? Planning to visit this place because we're visiting a relative as well as having fun around the island. Are there any particular great cafe / spots that we have to see there ?

2. Since we'll be traveling with our 6 years old, we're carrying stroller around but will it be a hassle to carry one to Lamma Island ? Wonder if the family trail is stroller friendly or is it advisable to drop the stroller at one cafe/restaurant there for couple hours and get it back, is this possible ?

3. We're also planning to go to Kennedy Town, is the tram from Causeway Bay (around Paterson Street) that goes straight to Kennedy Town (K-Town Praya ?) for 45 minutes operate every hour or rarely ? Planning to take this slow route to enjoy the view

Thanks

Visiting Lamma Island and Ma Wan with a young child and a stroller can be a fun experience, but there are a few practical points to keep in mind for smooth planning.

1. Ferry from Central to Ma Wan:

  • The ferry service from Central Pier to Ma Wan does not operate on a strict hourly schedule like some larger ferry routes. The frequency can vary depending on the day and season. It’s recommended to check the ferry operator’s official schedule online or call ahead to confirm departure times.
  • Ma Wan is a small island with a limited number of attractions. Popular spots include the Ma Wan Park, Noah’s Ark Theme Park, and some scenic cafes near the pier. Cafes around the island are limited, but there are a few with views of the sea and playgrounds suitable for children.

2. Lamma Island with a stroller:

  • Lamma Island has hilly terrain, especially on the Family Trail connecting Yung Shue Wan and Sok Kwu Wan. It is generally not very stroller-friendly due to stairs, slopes, and uneven paths.
  • For families with strollers, it is often easier to leave the stroller at a cafe or restaurant in Yung Shue Wan while exploring the trail and pick it up on the way back. Many cafes in Yung Shue Wan are accustomed to families and may allow you to temporarily store the stroller, but it’s polite to ask first.
  • Alternatively, consider using a lightweight folding stroller that can be carried when necessary, as some sections of the trail will require lifting or folding it.

3. Tram from Causeway Bay to Kennedy Town:

  • The tram service in Hong Kong operates frequently along the northern Hong Kong Island route, including from Causeway Bay to Kennedy Town. Trams generally run every 5–10 minutes during the day, not just once per hour, so you should have no problem catching one for a scenic ride.
  • The ride offers a slower, scenic alternative to the MTR and is ideal for enjoying city views, especially with a child on board. Trams accept contactless payment cards, so you don’t need cash if your card is compatible.

Overall, for your family trip:

  • Plan Ma Wan ferry times in advance due to variable schedules.
  • Use cafes on Lamma Island to temporarily store strollers or carry a foldable stroller.
  • Enjoy the frequent and scenic tram ride to Kennedy Town without worrying about long waits.

This approach balances sightseeing, child-friendly considerations, and convenience for a smooth day exploring Hong Kong’s islands.
