Outlook Email

I usually use gmail but just realised that it won't work when I am in Shanghai. Some people have said that it will work with a VPN which I have although there seems to be a lot different opinions regarding that working. Additionally I read somewhere that if I used an esim like Airalo that that might work. I am wondering if it's easier to open a new account and wondered if Outlook will work.

Thanks

When it comes to using email services in Shanghai, the situation is a bit nuanced due to internet restrictions in mainland China. Gmail, as you’ve noticed, is generally blocked. Accessing it usually requires a reliable VPN. Some users report intermittent success even with VPNs, depending on the VPN provider and timing.

Outlook (Microsoft email, including @outlook.com, @hotmail.com, and @live.com accounts) generally works more reliably in China without a VPN. Many travelers and expats report that they can send and receive emails through Outlook without any additional setup. However, access can sometimes be slower than usual or intermittently restricted, especially if using the web interface rather than the desktop or mobile app.

Regarding eSIMs like Airalo, having a local or international data plan may help with connectivity, but it does not bypass government internet restrictions. If you try to access Gmail without a VPN over an Airalo or local SIM, you will likely still face the same blocks.

  • If you already have a Gmail account, the easiest way to ensure continuous access is to use a VPN consistently.
  • Opening a new Outlook account is a convenient alternative and usually works without a VPN.
  • Using an eSIM provides mobile data access, but will not automatically bypass blocks on services like Gmail.

In summary, Outlook is generally a reliable choice in Shanghai, and creating a new account could save the hassle of dealing with VPNs. If you want to continue using Gmail, make sure your VPN is set up and tested before traveling.
