Fairbanks to Denali
we were all excited to book an Alaskan trip together with another couple . We had a 3 way call with the Holland America travel agent and we thought we were booked on their 12 day land and sea cruise (which starts in Fairbanks then 3 nights in Denali)
THEN she told us that they only had availability to book one couple for the land part! So... now we are thinking about doing the land part on our own and meeting up with the ship in Whittier. I'm sure renting a car is the best option... but we thought we would explore either train or bus. ANy insight? thanks
If you want to handle the Denali portion on your own before meeting the cruise in Whittier, there are several ways to do it. Renting a car gives you the most flexibility for timing and stops along the way, but buses and trains are also viable and provide scenic alternatives.
Here’s a breakdown of options:
- Rental Car: Renting a car from Fairbanks allows you to drive to Denali at your own pace. The drive is about 2–2.5 hours each way. This option also makes it easier to stop at viewpoints or do side hikes, and you can return the car before heading to Whittier.
- Rail Travel: The Alaska Railroad offers a Denali Star route from Fairbanks to Denali. The ride takes approximately 4–5 hours and is very scenic, passing through the Alaska Range and along the Nenana River. You can book dome car seating for optimal views. This is a comfortable option, but less flexible than a car if you want to explore off-train.
- Bus/Shuttle: Several companies provide shuttle services between Fairbanks and Denali hotels/lodges. The ride is similar in duration to driving yourself, but you won’t have the flexibility to stop along the route. This can be convenient if you prefer not to drive.
Once you finish your Denali stay, you would need to travel south to Whittier to meet the cruise. This can be done either by:
- Driving yourself via rental car (approximately 6–7 hours from Denali to Whittier).
- Taking a combination of bus/shuttle or train from Denali back to Anchorage, then a bus or taxi to Whittier.
Key considerations:
- Driving gives maximum flexibility, but ensure you are comfortable with Alaska roads and allow extra time for weather or sightseeing stops.
- The train offers a scenic, relaxed experience but is less flexible in terms of timing and exploring Denali surroundings.
- Booking ahead is crucial in summer months, as both trains and lodges can fill quickly.
Overall, if you’re aiming for a balance between convenience, scenery, and some exploration time in Denali, taking the train to Denali and renting a car in Anchorage for the final leg to Whittier could be a good compromise. Alternatively, a rental car from Fairbanks to Denali and then down to Whittier works well if you prefer full control over your itinerary.
