If not Anchorage, then what

We are a family of 5, ages 15-22-24 and two adults. Heading up late June into July for a little over two weeks. We have a car. We have arranged 4 nights each in girdwood and Seward (including a full day cruise), and 3 near Denali. I think we will hit most of the frequently suggested stops in each place and along the way. We have one odd night before we drop off middle child to fly back early from anchorage. Then the rest of us have 4 more days before we leave.

We originally planned to stay in anchorage remaining 3 nights after dropping child, but almost everything I have read said it is not worth while. So we may do our single night before his early flight in anchorage but what do we do with the other days? I’d like to limit to roughly 4 hours driving time from anchorage because that late in the trip we will be tired of the car. We like being outside and hikes up to about 4 hours. Ideally we would find one place to stay for all three nights or maybe we stay in anchorage one night and need a place for two night.

Thanks for any input.

Given that you’ll already have explored Girdwood, Seward, and Denali, and that you’re looking to avoid spending three nights in Anchorage, there are several excellent options within roughly 4 hours’ drive that offer beautiful outdoor experiences and moderate hiking opportunities.

Option 1: Talkeetna

Talkeetna is about 2-3 hours north of Anchorage and provides a charming small-town Alaskan feel. It’s a great base for outdoor activities, short hikes, and river adventures.

  • Hiking options: Talkeetna Lakes Park for easy walks or Mount Denali view trails for moderate hikes.
  • Other activities: Flightseeing tours around Denali, rafting or kayaking on the Susitna River, local art galleries, and quaint shops.
  • Accommodation: Several lodges and boutique inns suitable for families, offering scenic views and comfortable stays.

Option 2: Whittier / Portage Valley

About 1-1.5 hours south of Anchorage, Whittier gives access to the Chugach National Forest and Prince William Sound. This is ideal if you still want some glacier or coastal scenery without the long drives.

  • Hiking: Portage Glacier Trail (about 2 hours roundtrip), Byron Glacier Trail, and short forest walks.
  • Activities: Day cruises in Prince William Sound if missed in Seward, kayaking options, or just enjoying the spectacular scenery.
  • Accommodation: Lodges and B&Bs in Whittier or nearby Girdwood extensions if you prefer consistency.

Option 3: Matanuska / Glennallen Area

Heading northeast from Anchorage, the Matanuska Glacier area is about 2-3 hours away. It offers unique glacier landscapes, and short guided glacier hikes are available for families.

  • Hiking: Matanuska Glacier ice walks or short valley hikes nearby.
  • Other activities: Scenic drives along the Glenn Highway, wildlife spotting, and photography opportunities.
  • Accommodation: Inns and lodges near Palmer or Glennallen provide a convenient base for these activities.

Additional Tips:

  • Since you’ll be tired of driving, it’s best to pick one base location for the remaining 3 nights.
  • Talkeetna is a great “central” choice for moderate activities and nice town amenities, while Whittier is closer to water-based adventures.
  • Book accommodations early, as summer is peak season, especially for family-sized rooms or lodges with views.
  • If you want a more relaxed final few days, consider just a scenic lodge stay near a glacier or river with one or two half-day hikes.

Overall, Talkeetna or Whittier would provide a balance of outdoor adventure, moderate driving, and comfort, allowing your family to enjoy Alaska’s beauty without excessive transit at the end of your trip.
