What to do with kids 1 and 4

We have been to Siesta Key multiple times (adults only). Now going with the grandkids, ages 1 and 4), in June. I was wondering what, besides beach and pool, we might be able to do that they would enjoy. I assume the Mote Aquarium, as we love that, but anything else of interest? Thanks.

Visiting Siesta Key with young children can be a lot of fun beyond just the beach and pool. While the beach itself is a huge attraction for toddlers and preschoolers with its soft sand and shallow waters, there are several other activities nearby that can keep little ones engaged.

Kid-friendly attractions and activities:

  • Mote Marine Laboratory & Aquarium: As you mentioned, this is a great choice. Kids will love seeing the sharks, rays, sea turtles, and touch tanks. It’s both fun and educational.
  • Big Cat Habitat & Gulf Coast Sanctuary: Located a short drive away in Sarasota, this small zoo and sanctuary features exotic cats, lemurs, and other animals that can fascinate young children.
  • Myakka River State Park: A fun day trip where you can do a short nature walk, spot alligators and birds, and even take a canopy walkway. Keep activities short for the 1-year-old.
  • Children’s Garden or playgrounds: The Sarasota area has small local parks and playgrounds perfect for toddlers to run around and burn energy safely.
  • Siesta Key Village: While primarily a shopping and dining area, strolling through the village can be fun for kids with ice cream stops and watching street performers.

Water-based activities suitable for toddlers and preschoolers:

  • Gentle boat tours: Some local operators offer short eco-tours or dolphin watching cruises that are kid-friendly. Make sure to check duration (30–60 minutes is ideal for little ones).
  • Kayak or paddleboard rentals: For the 4-year-old, a tandem kayak with an adult can be exciting. The calm waters around Siesta Key are generally safe.
  • Sandcastle building and shell collecting: A simple but endlessly entertaining activity. Early morning is the best time before it gets crowded.

Additional tips:

  • Plan early morning or late afternoon beach time to avoid the intense June heat.
  • Bring plenty of shade, snacks, and water to keep the young children comfortable.
  • Consider alternating high-energy activities with quiet breaks at your accommodation or local parks to avoid overstimulation.

With a mix of beach, aquarium visits, short nature explorations, and playful stops, your trip to Siesta Key with your grandchildren can be memorable and enjoyable for all ages.
