Pre-Cruise Stay

Taking an Alaskan Cruisetour the end of the summer. It says it starts from a "hotel in downtown" Anchorage, overnight and then off to Denali then the cruise part of this "cruisetour" package. We will like arrive 1 or 2 days prior to this and are trying to sort out location/hotel/airbnb options. Scanning through the forums and getting ideas about pre-cruise "do it your own" tours/activities out of Anchorage. The question that I have is where to stay/base ourselves before that first day of cruisetour check in at this unnamed hotel, as of yet. Is it recommended to also base ourselves in downtown Anchorage? We had assumed we would not rent a car, but not sure how walkable downtown Anchorage truly is. The hotel prices are higher than expected ($300+/night), so will also consider airbnbs for those 2 nights. Would appreciate recommendations on areas to stay to make the most out of those 1-2 days and if it's worth it to rent a car? We expect the start of the cruisetour to be full of adventure, so not looking for but so much on our own in advance. We enjoy light/moderate hiking, great food and wildlife. (NOTE: the cruise will end in Vancouver so this will be our only opportunity to see Anchorage.)

For a pre-cruise stay in Anchorage before your Alaskan Cruisetour, basing yourself in downtown Anchorage is generally the most convenient option, especially if you don’t plan to rent a car. Downtown is compact and walkable, with easy access to restaurants, shops, the Tony Knowles Coastal Trail, and the Alaska Railroad depot if you need transportation options. Staying downtown also positions you close to where most cruisetour buses or shuttles depart for Denali, which is typically convenient for the start of your package.

Considerations for your stay:

  • Hotels: Downtown hotels are more expensive, often $300+/night during peak season, but they offer walkability and easy access to pre-cruise activities. Examples include the Hotel Captain Cook, Anchorage Marriott Downtown, and Sheraton Anchorage.
  • Airbnbs: There are alternative Airbnb options in downtown or nearby neighborhoods (Fairview, Spenard) that can be more budget-friendly. These may include kitchens if you want to prepare your own meals.
  • Car rental: For just 1–2 nights, a rental car may not be necessary if your focus is light exploration of downtown, the coastal trail, and nearby attractions. Taxis, rideshares, and hotel shuttles are generally sufficient for a short stay. If you want to explore areas outside downtown, like Earthquake Park, Anchorage Museum, or nearby trails with more freedom, a rental car could be useful.

Activities and light sightseeing in Anchorage during your 1–2 day pre-cruise stay:

  • Walk or bike the Tony Knowles Coastal Trail for scenic views and potential wildlife sightings (moose, birds).
  • Visit the Anchorage Museum for local art, history, and exhibits on Alaska’s natural environment.
  • Explore local dining, seafood, and cafes in downtown Anchorage.
  • Short hikes or nature walks in Kincaid Park or Chugach State Park if you want light/moderate outdoor activity.
  • Consider a harbor cruise or flightseeing tour for wildlife and glacier views if you want a quick, memorable Alaskan experience before your Cruisetour.

In summary, staying in downtown Anchorage for your pre-cruise nights is recommended for convenience, walkability, and proximity to restaurants and pre-cruise activities. Renting a car is optional but can add flexibility if you plan to explore beyond downtown. Airbnbs may be a more affordable choice while still keeping you centrally located, and 1–2 days in Anchorage is sufficient for light sightseeing and preparing for your adventure-packed Cruisetour.
