private driver to Whittier from Anchorage

Hi there. We are taking a cruise out of whittier on June 15th. (ship sails at 7:00pm) I know there is a bus that takes us there for $75.00 per person but I was kind of thinking it would be fun to have a driver so we could stop a little along the way. there are 4 of us Does anyone know of any private driver that might be interested in chauffeuring? . It seems like that would be a good job for a college kid home for the summer hahahaha

Hiring a private driver from Anchorage to Whittier for your June 15th cruise can be a great way to enjoy the scenic drive along Turnagain Arm and make stops along the way without worrying about timing or parking. The drive itself is about 60-70 miles and takes roughly 1.5–2 hours without stops, but with scenic photo opportunities, it can easily take 3 hours.

Options for private transportation:

  • Private shuttle services: Some local shuttle companies offer private charters, which can be customized for stops along the Turnagain Arm, Beluga Point, or Portage Glacier. Examples include Alaska Coach Tours, Alaska Luxury Transportation, or local limo/shuttle services. You would need to contact them in advance to confirm availability and rates for a private group of 4.
  • Ride-share or app-based services: Anchorage has limited rideshare availability for long distances, but some local drivers are willing to do private charters through apps like Uber or Lyft if you arrange ahead and negotiate a flat rate. However, this is less reliable than a professional charter company.
  • Local tour guides/college students: Posting on local community boards (Facebook groups like “Anchorage Alaska Community” or Craigslist rideshare section) can sometimes connect you with a responsible local driver looking for a short gig. Be sure to check references or reviews if going this route.

Tips for making the trip enjoyable:

  • Plan for at least one or two photo stops—Beluga Point is popular for wildlife sightings and scenic photos, and Portage Glacier has a viewpoint with a short walk.
  • Confirm pickup time allowing for cruise check-in procedures; most cruise lines require boarding by 5:30–6:00pm for a 7:00pm departure.
  • Discuss the vehicle type in advance—if you want more comfort, make sure it’s a spacious SUV or van suitable for four people plus luggage.
  • Ask if the driver is familiar with quick detours or less crowded viewpoints to maximize your scenic experience.

Overall, a private driver is a flexible and enjoyable alternative to the standard bus, especially if you want a relaxed pace and the chance to stop for photos or short walks along the route. Booking at least a few weeks in advance is recommended, as June is a busy month in Alaska.
