Pontoon rental first week of March
Group of 8, looking for things to do. We were there same time last year, Crab Island was pretty quiet yet which is ok. Understand water will still be pretty cold. Will it be worth our time/money to just cruise around? Any pros/cons for renting near Harborwalk vs Ft. Walton side? Ages range from 24 to 58. Thanks in advance.
Renting a pontoon in Destin during the first week of March can still be enjoyable, even though the water will be chilly and some typical summer activities may not be ideal. For a group of 8 with a wide age range, cruising around for scenery, wildlife spotting, and relaxing on the water can be worthwhile.
Pros of Renting a Pontoon in Early March:
- Much less crowded — Crab Island and the Choctawhatchee Bay area are peaceful, so you can enjoy open space and calm cruising.
- Lower rental prices — many companies have off-season rates, so you may get a larger boat or longer rental for less money.
- Scenic views and wildlife — even without swimming, you can see dolphins, shorebirds, and coastal scenery.
- Relaxed experience — fewer boats and jet skis around make it safer and more comfortable for all ages.
Cons / Considerations:
- Cold water — swimming or wading is unlikely unless you bring wetsuits, so water activities may be limited.
- Limited services — some waterfront restaurants, rental companies, and beach services may have reduced hours in early March.
- Weather variability — it can be windy or cool, so dress in layers and bring windbreakers or blankets.
HarborWalk Village vs Fort Walton Side:
- HarborWalk Village: Most pontoon rentals are concentrated here. Pros include easy access to restaurants, bars, and attractions; staff assistance; and organized docking areas. It’s also convenient if you want to combine cruising with a meal or short stop at Crab Island. Cons: a bit more foot and boat traffic.
- Fort Walton Beach Side: Quieter and more local-feeling. Rental options are smaller, and you may find slightly better deals. It’s ideal if you want a more secluded, relaxed cruise, but fewer nearby amenities.
Tips for Your Group:
- Bring snacks, drinks, and layered clothing — you won’t be swimming much, but a pontoon day can be relaxing and social.
- Check the rental company’s seasonal policies — some boats may have engine limits or restrictions in early March.
- Plan your route in advance — cruising along the bay, through the pass, and around the quiet areas near Crab Island can fill a few hours nicely.
In summary, for a group of mixed ages, renting a pontoon in early March is worth it for scenic cruising, wildlife viewing, and a relaxing day on the water. HarborWalk is best for convenience and amenities, while Fort Walton offers a quieter, more budget-friendly experience.
