First time in Cali

Hello all! My hubby and I are thinking of visiting California in a couple of weeks. We both have never been to Cali and need some input. He suggested San Diego. Thanks!

P.S. We are genx 😆🤣

Visiting California for the first time is exciting, and San Diego is an excellent choice, especially for a Gen X couple looking for a mix of sightseeing, culture, and relaxation. The city has a wonderful blend of beaches, history, and vibrant neighborhoods. Since you’ll only be there a couple of weeks from now, here’s a detailed guide to help you plan your trip.

Where to Stay:

  • Gaslamp Quarter: Central location, walkable to restaurants, bars, and nightlife. Good if you want to explore downtown in the evenings.
  • La Jolla: Upscale, scenic oceanfront area with great views, boutique shopping, and easy access to beaches.
  • Coronado Island: More relaxed vibe, iconic Hotel del Coronado, and close to the beach. Easy ferry ride from downtown.

Must-See Attractions:

  • Balboa Park: Museums, gardens, and the world-famous San Diego Zoo.
  • Old Town San Diego: Historic area showcasing California’s early history with shops, restaurants, and historic sites.
  • La Jolla Cove: Scenic coastline with sea lions, tide pools, and easy walking paths.
  • Coronado Beach: Famous for its wide sandy beach and gentle waves, perfect for a relaxed day outdoors.
  • USS Midway Museum: A naval aircraft carrier turned museum, great for history buffs.
  • Sunset Cliffs: Ideal for evening walks and catching spectacular sunsets over the Pacific Ocean.

Food & Drink:

  • Try seafood at local favorites like Point Loma Seafoods or The Fish Market.
  • Gaslamp Quarter offers a variety of trendy restaurants and bars for dinner or evening cocktails.
  • La Jolla has excellent cafes and boutique restaurants, perfect for brunch or a relaxed lunch.

Tips for First-Time Visitors:

  • Renting a car is highly recommended for flexibility, as attractions are spread out.
  • Plan morning visits to outdoor sites to avoid midday heat, especially beaches and parks.
  • Book popular attractions like the San Diego Zoo or USS Midway in advance to secure tickets.
  • Even if you’re not big on nightlife, consider a stroll through Gaslamp in the evening for the lively atmosphere.

For a first-time California experience, San Diego offers a perfect balance of iconic sights, ocean views, and laid-back vibes. With a mix of cultural attractions, scenic walks, and relaxed dining, it’s ideal for a short, enjoyable trip for two.
