Trip advise for SLC to Trinidad, CO

My husband and I need to drive round trip to Trinidad CO from SLC. I am dreading it but I thought if I could turn it into a road trip with some fun stops it might be better. I have already been to most of the spots in UT so I am focusing on CO. We have already been to Durango, Pagosa Springs and Mesa Verde. We will be going the first week of April. I was thinking we would maybe drive to Grand Junction and stay there the first night and then hopefully explore around that day somewhere on our trip. There is also the return trip where we could do something. We are in our 60's, we ski and hike and like outdoor things. I love a good soak in a hot spring, my husband barely tolerates it.

Hi there,

Turning your long drive from Salt Lake City to Trinidad, CO into a scenic road trip is a great idea. Since you’ve already visited Durango, Pagosa Springs, and Mesa Verde, and your trip is in early April, focusing on other Colorado highlights along the way will make the drive more enjoyable. Here’s a detailed plan with stops and activities tailored to your interests in skiing, hiking, and outdoor experiences:

Day 1: SLC to Grand Junction

  • Drive from Salt Lake City to Grand Junction (~4–5 hours). This stretch is scenic along I-70 through the Utah mountains and desert landscapes.
  • Once in Grand Junction, explore Colorado National Monument, which has short scenic hikes and overlooks offering dramatic canyons and rock formations.
  • Overnight in Grand Junction. Consider dining downtown at a local restaurant or enjoying a relaxed evening in the hotel.

Day 2: Grand Junction to Trinidad

  • Drive south toward Trinidad (~5–6 hours). Consider a detour through the Gunnison and Black Canyon of the Gunnison if you enjoy scenic drives and short hikes. The South Rim Road has overlooks and easy trails.
  • Depending on your pace, stop in Pueblo for lunch and a walk along the Riverwalk, which is charming and less touristy.
  • Arrive in Trinidad, CO in the evening and check into a comfortable hotel for a restful night.

Activities in and around Trinidad:

  • Stroll the historic downtown with its Victorian architecture and local shops.
  • Explore nearby outdoor areas like Trinidad Lake State Park for short hikes or birdwatching.
  • Since your husband isn’t a big fan of hot springs, consider just a brief soak if you find a nearby resort like Mount Princeton Hot Springs on the return trip rather than spending hours relaxing.

Return Trip Options:

  • Head north toward Colorado Springs and take the scenic route along San Isabel National Forest. There are many short hikes and picnic spots along the way.
  • Stop in Boulder if you want a mix of charming town atmosphere and easy mountain trails. Chautauqua Park has short, scenic hikes suitable for a few hours outdoors.
  • Consider spending a night in Glenwood Springs or Vail for a more relaxed return. Glenwood Springs has hot springs for a quick soak, or Vail has nice mountain scenery and hiking.
  • Drive back to SLC via I-70 for a direct and scenic route through the Rockies, stopping for overlooks and short walks as needed.

Tips for your trip:

  • Check road conditions in early April, especially through mountain passes; snow is possible.
  • Plan a mix of short hikes and scenic drives to avoid fatigue during long driving days.
  • Book accommodations in advance, especially in smaller towns like Grand Junction, Trinidad, and Glenwood Springs, since early April can still have some spring break travelers.

Overall, this route offers a mix of scenic drives, outdoor activities, charming small towns, and manageable driving segments, turning your SLC-to-Trinidad round trip into a memorable Colorado road trip experience without focusing on the spots you’ve already visited.
