Z-Visa application on tourist visa in Third Country

Hi everyone, just need my mind putting at ease about the Z-Visa application in a third country whilst I'm on a tourist visa in Indonesia. I'm British and I've just received my work permit notification and going back to the UK is not really possible. The Indonesian visa centre said they accept application for foreigners but l'm skeptical. Cheers

Applying for a Chinese Z-Visa (work visa) from a third country while on a tourist visa is a situation that happens frequently, but it does carry some nuances you should be aware of.

1. General rules:

  • The Z-Visa is meant for foreigners who have received an official work permit or invitation from a Chinese employer and intend to work in China.
  • In principle, you can apply for a Z-Visa at any Chinese embassy or consulate abroad, including in a country where you are legally present on a different visa (like a tourist visa).
  • Requirements generally include:
    • Valid passport
    • Work permit notification from the employer in China
    • Completed visa application form
    • Passport photos
    • Other supporting documents as requested by the local consulate

2. Applying in a third country (Indonesia in your case):

  • Most Chinese consulates allow third-country nationals to apply, but some may prioritize residents or require proof of legal stay in the host country.
  • Being on a tourist visa in Indonesia usually qualifies as legal stay, but you should confirm with the specific Chinese consulate handling Z-Visa applications.
  • Processing times may vary, and some consulates may request an interview or additional documentation.

3. Precautions and tips:

  • Always confirm directly with the local Chinese consulate, ideally via email or phone, about their acceptance of third-country applications while on a tourist visa.
  • Prepare all documents carefully, as missing paperwork can result in delays or refusal.
  • Keep in mind that a Z-Visa must be converted into a residence permit within 30 days of entering China, so timing your application to align with your planned arrival is important.

In summary, your concern is valid, but applying for a Z-Visa in Indonesia while on a tourist visa is usually possible if the consulate accepts third-country applications and you have the proper work permit notification. Direct confirmation with the consulate will provide certainty and peace of mind.
