Jade Dragon Snow Mountain (Yulong)

We will be visiting Yunnan in July and hope to visit Yulong, hopefully on the panoramic sightseeing train from Lijiang, which apparently commenced operations a few days ago.

Is it worth buying entry tickets to the mountain and cable car tickets ahead of time e.g. thorough trip.com, or can you just get them on the day? And is any other good place to buy them online other than trip.com?

And does anyone here have experience with the panoramic train, or is it too early for that, since it only started operating last week?

Jade Dragon Snow Mountain (Yulong) in Yunnan is one of the most popular attractions near Lijiang, and visiting in July means you will be in the high season, with many domestic tourists. Planning ahead is highly recommended to avoid long queues and potential sold-out tickets.

Regarding tickets:

  • Entry and cable car tickets: It is highly advisable to purchase entry tickets and cable car tickets online in advance. Platforms like Trip.com are reliable and widely used by travelers. Buying in advance ensures you have a reserved time slot, which is important during peak season. On-site purchases are possible, but queues can be long, and certain times may sell out.
  • Alternative platforms: Other reputable options include Klook, Ctrip (the domestic Chinese version), or the official Yulong Snow Mountain website. Prices are generally similar, but these platforms sometimes offer English-language support and instant e-ticketing.

Regarding the panoramic sightseeing train:

  • The panoramic train from Lijiang to Yulong is a very new service, having just started operations. Early reviews are limited, so real-world experience may vary.
  • The train promises scenic views and a more comfortable ride compared to regular buses, but since it is new, there could be teething problems like schedule adjustments or ticketing glitches.
  • It’s a good idea to check the latest updates and possibly book tickets in advance online if the platform allows, or consult your hotel or local tour operators in Lijiang, who may have up-to-date information.

In summary, for a smooth visit in July:

  • Book entry and cable car tickets online in advance to secure your preferred times.
  • Monitor the panoramic train schedules and consider booking if possible, but be prepared for early operational hiccups.
  • Have a backup plan with the regular buses or private car transfers from Lijiang to the mountain in case of train issues.

Planning ahead will make your visit more relaxed, especially in peak season, and give you a better chance to enjoy the scenery without time pressure or ticket-related stress.
