Flying BA from UK to Shanghai and China Air to Taiwan

I understand that I will have to get my bag when I land in Shanghai, go through customs etc then find China Air desk somewhere inside the Airport and check in and go through customs etc. I know that I do not need a visa for either flying to Shanghai and also then flying to Taiwan. When I arrive in Shanghai are there any tips anyone can give to make my life easier rather than a confused one so I can get through quickly as I have 3 hours to do this. I am a senior and travelling on my own which is a little daunting in itself let alone not knowing the layout of what to do when landing. Thank you in advance.

Arriving in Shanghai on a British Airways flight and transferring to a China Airlines flight to Taiwan involves a few steps, but with some preparation, it can be managed smoothly even as a solo senior traveler.

1. Arrival and baggage:

  • Once you land in Shanghai, follow signs for baggage claim to collect your checked luggage. You will need it because you are exiting to transit to another airline.
  • Keep your luggage tags, passport, and boarding pass handy for easy access.

2. Customs and immigration:

  • Proceed to immigration for entry into China. Since you are in transit and planning to leave China the same day, make sure your documents and onward flight details are ready to show if asked.
  • After immigration, proceed through customs. Generally, you will just declare items if required; otherwise, the process is straightforward.

3. Finding China Airlines check-in:

  • After customs, follow signs for domestic/transit flights or airline check-in counters.
  • China Airlines typically has a dedicated counter; check airport monitors or ask airport staff for directions.
  • Check in for your Taiwan flight and drop your baggage again if necessary.

4. Security and boarding:

  • After checking in, you will go through security screening again before reaching your departure gate.
  • Be sure to arrive at the gate well before boarding; 3 hours should be plenty of time if you move steadily.

5. Tips to make the process easier:

  • Consider a luggage trolley to avoid fatigue while carrying bags.
  • Keep important documents, boarding passes, and passport in an easily accessible pocket or travel organizer.
  • Look for airport staff assistance counters if you feel lost; staff are used to helping international travelers.
  • Allow extra time for walking between terminals if needed, as Shanghai airport is large.
  • Ask for wheelchair or senior assistance at check-in if walking long distances is tiring; airports in Shanghai offer this service for free.

With these steps and tips, your 3-hour layover should be sufficient to collect luggage, clear customs, check in for China Airlines, and reach your gate without stress.
