Hello! My family is staying in Lahaina for 5 nights end of march. When I booked I honestly wasn’t thinking about the town possibly still recovering from the fires. I am wondering if we should/need to stay somewhere else on the island out of respect if they’re still rebuilding? Or do they need the tourism? We live In Florida and completely understand both sides due to towns being wiped out from hurricanes. We want to support but also trying to enjoy our once In A lifetime visit to Maui.
Your concern is thoughtful and reflects the delicate balance between supporting a community and being mindful of ongoing recovery efforts. As of now, Lahaina itself is slowly rebuilding from the devastating fires, but the main tourist areas—particularly along Front Street, the harbor, and nearby resorts—have seen significant restoration. Some local businesses may still be closed, while others are operating to serve both residents and visitors.
It’s important to recognize that tourism plays a vital role in helping the local economy recover. Hotels, restaurants, tour operators, and shops rely heavily on visitor spending, and most residents appreciate guests who come with respect and awareness of the situation.
Here are some practical considerations for your stay:
If you still feel unsure, you could split your stay—a few nights in Lahaina to support businesses, and a few nights elsewhere on Maui, such as Kihei, Wailea, or Paia, which were less affected. This can provide a broader experience of the island while being considerate of local conditions.
Ultimately, visiting responsibly and respectfully is generally welcomed, as long as you are sensitive to what the community has endured and follow any posted guidance. Your presence, especially spending at local businesses, contributes to recovery and helps maintain livelihoods.
In summary, you don’t need to avoid Lahaina entirely. Staying there, with awareness and respect, can be both supportive to locals and meaningful for your once-in-a-lifetime Maui experience.
