Apple maps in China
Hi,
I’m traveling to China in two months and heard that Apple Maps is the best option for non-Chinese speakers. However, when I search for directions, I keep seeing the message: “This direction is not available.” Does anyone know why this happens and whether Apple Maps will work once I’m in China?
I’ll be using an eSIM from Bytesim.
Apple Maps in China works differently than in many other countries due to local mapping regulations and restrictions on geographic data. This is why you may see messages like “This direction is not available” when trying to get directions from outside China or before connecting to a local network.
Here’s what you should know about Apple Maps in China:
- Apple Maps in China uses data from local mapping providers, which is optimized for users physically located in China. This means some directions may not appear correctly or be restricted when you are outside China.
- Once you are in China and connected to a local network, Apple Maps should work for basic navigation such as driving, walking, and public transport, though some rural or restricted areas might still be missing.
- Some map features may require a local SIM or eSIM active in China to display routes accurately, since the service may verify location via mobile networks.
Practical tips for using Apple Maps in China:
- Enable location services on your device and ensure your eSIM or local SIM is active once you arrive.
- Consider downloading offline maps or using alternative mapping apps like Baidu Maps or Gaode/AMap, which are widely used in China and provide more complete coverage. Note that these apps may require some familiarity or translation assistance for non-Chinese speakers.
- If you plan to use public transport directions, Apple Maps may show limited options in some cities; local apps like WeChat mini-programs or official city transport apps often give more accurate schedules and routes.
In summary, Apple Maps will function better once you are physically in China with a working eSIM or SIM card, but for comprehensive navigation, especially outside major cities, having a backup like Baidu Maps or Gaode is recommended.
