Train and bus from Anchorage

Hi

Planning a day trip from Anchorage to Seward to take the 6hr Kenai N/P cruise. I plan to take the bus one way and train the other. Is there a preference as which leg is better to take the train? The bus seems to arrive earlier in the morning, so may be less rushed. It will be daylight for both journeys in late August. Also considering adventure class rather than Goldstar as it seems the difference is mainly a sit down meal which is not important. Travelling for the experience and views. And like the idea of being able to move around the train. I would travel both directions by train and pay for Goldstar if the experience and views warrant. Disregarding the meals.

Thanks

Taking a day trip from Anchorage to Seward for the Kenai Fjords National Park cruise is a fantastic way to experience Alaska’s scenery. Choosing between bus and train for each leg can depend on your priorities of timing, views, and flexibility to move around.

Bus vs. Train Considerations:

  • Bus: Generally faster and often scheduled to arrive in Seward early in the morning, which can be advantageous if you want a less rushed start for your cruise. Buses usually follow highways and have limited stops, so you won’t get as much flexibility to move around or experience the scenery from different angles.
  • Train: Offers a scenic, slower journey with opportunities to move around and enjoy panoramic views of mountains, rivers, and coastline. Adventure Class is comfortable for sightseeing and walking around, while GoldStar Class provides an elevated dome-style viewing car and included meals. Since you are less concerned about meals, Adventure Class is perfectly suitable for capturing views and flexibility.

Recommended Leg for Train:

Most travelers suggest taking the train on the return leg from Seward to Anchorage. Here’s why:

  • You’ll have just completed the cruise and likely be more relaxed, so a slower, scenic journey back on the train allows you to enjoy the views at your leisure without worrying about missing the cruise departure.
  • The bus can get you to Seward early, ensuring you arrive with plenty of time for the morning cruise without feeling rushed.
  • The train ride back in the afternoon still provides daylight views, and the ability to move around, take photos, and enjoy the Alaska landscape after the cruise.

Additional Tips:

  • Book your tickets early, especially if planning to use GoldStar for a fully elevated view. Adventure Class is generally sufficient for sightseeing and moving around.
  • Bring layers; even in late August, coastal temperatures can be cool and windy, particularly on the train.
  • Pack snacks and water, though Adventure Class has a café car. You can also bring a small picnic for the train ride back.
  • Have your camera ready for both legs, especially the train return, as you may catch wildlife, glaciers, and river views that aren’t visible from the highway.

In summary, taking the bus from Anchorage to Seward ensures an early, efficient arrival for the cruise, while returning by train allows for a relaxed, scenic experience. Adventure Class is sufficient for your priorities, and GoldStar is only recommended if you prefer the elevated viewing experience and don’t mind paying extra for the meal.
