place for a picnic
After a 4 mile hike and touring the Chapel of the Holy Cross, we would like to venture further down 179 toward VOC and stop for a picnic lunch that we will have packed. Where would be a good spot for a picnic? Don't want to go any further than VOC. Thank you.
After hiking and visiting the Chapel of the Holy Cross, taking a scenic picnic along Highway 179 toward Village of Oak Creek (VOC) is a great idea. This stretch of road is lined with red rock vistas, small pullouts, and natural areas where you can enjoy your packed lunch with beautiful views without going too far.
Here are some good options for a picnic between Chapel of the Holy Cross and VOC:
- Bell Rock / Courthouse Butte pullouts: Just a few miles south of the Chapel, there are small pullouts along the highway with parking areas and scenic views of Bell Rock and Courthouse Butte. These spots are informal but provide space to sit on rocks or bring a blanket.
- Red Rock State Park picnic areas: Slightly west of 179 but very accessible, Red Rock State Park has designated picnic tables and shaded areas. It’s quieter than VOC itself and offers fantastic red rock backdrops.
- Little Horse Trailhead or pullouts: Located along 179 closer to VOC, some trailheads have open areas where you can park and have a picnic. These spots offer a mix of shade and open views without being far off the road.
Additional tips for your picnic:
- Bring a blanket or portable chairs—most pullouts don’t have tables.
- Pack trash bags to leave the area clean; there are few trash receptacles along 179.
- Arrive a bit earlier if you want a quieter spot, as weekends can get busy.
- Consider bringing sun protection, as shade is limited in some areas.
These locations allow you to enjoy the iconic Sedona scenery, have a relaxed lunch, and still be within a short drive of the Village of Oak Creek.
