Jinshanling to Simatai West Section of Great Wall

We are looking at walking this 5 km section of the Great Wall when visiting later in the year. We do a lot of walking and are reasonably fit however have knee issues especially when there are a lot of steps. Does anyone know how difficult this walk is and how much of the 5km's is steps? If there are a lot of steps are there any easier sections of the Great Wall to walk? Many thanks in advance

The Jinshanling to Simatai West section of the Great Wall is a popular 5 km hike known for its beautiful scenery and partially restored wall sections. It offers a mix of restored and wild areas, making it both picturesque and moderately challenging.

Regarding difficulty:

  • About half of the 5 km walk involves steep steps and uneven terrain. The steps can be high and irregular in some sections, which can be tough on knees.
  • The trail also includes steep ascents and descents, especially near towers, which can exacerbate knee issues.
  • Some flatter, restored sections have gentler slopes and more even surfaces, but even these require careful walking.

If you are concerned about knee strain, here are some alternative suggestions:

  • Mutianyu Great Wall: This section is fully restored with gentler slopes and steps, and you can take a cable car up and a toboggan slide down, reducing knee strain.
  • Badaling Great Wall: Highly restored, easy to walk, and mostly uniform steps; good for less strenuous walking.
  • Huanghuacheng Great Wall: Partially restored with scenic views and fewer steep sections, offering a mix of walking challenges.

Additional tips:

  • Bring walking poles to support knees, especially on steep or uneven sections.
  • Wear sturdy shoes with good grip.
  • Take your time and rest at towers if needed; even fit walkers can find Jinshanling challenging.

In summary, Jinshanling to Simatai West is moderately difficult with significant steps that may challenge knees. If your priority is a scenic but easier walk, Mutianyu or Badaling sections would be more suitable.
