any must have pick ups in Sonoma/Napa
Im doing a 1 night pass through of Sonoma and Napa before continuing my vacation in SF I figured I might as well pick up stuff during this time to enjoy later on the trip
two I have in mind already are:
-an off dry/ semi-sweet sparkling wine (bonus if its a off dry sparkling red - this is my wife's all time favorite type of wine)
-a bakery with goodies that can be enjoyed the day after
any suggestions are appreciated
Passing through Sonoma and Napa for just one night is a perfect opportunity to pick up a few special items to enjoy later on your trip. Since you’re interested in sparkling wines and bakery treats, you can also explore local artisanal foods and other Napa/Sonoma specialties.
Wine Picks:
- For an off-dry or semi-sweet sparkling wine, consider wineries known for their sparkling styles like Domaine Carneros or Schramsberg Vineyards. Both offer excellent off-dry options. Check ahead if you want to try a sparkling red; some small producers in Sonoma (like Iron Horse Vineyards) occasionally have off-dry sparkling reds.
- If you prefer a smaller, boutique winery for a unique experience, Korbel Champagne Cellars in Sonoma produces a range of sparkling wines and often has semi-sweet styles suitable for easy pickup.
Bakery and Treats:
- Bouchon Bakery in Yountville (Napa) is famous for pastries that travel well, such as macarons, tarts, and croissants.
- Gott’s Roadside has local baked goods in addition to their classic burgers; their cookies and pies are popular for quick enjoyment.
- Consider visiting a farmers’ market in Sonoma or Napa for fresh breads, artisanal jams, and small-batch chocolates that will last a day or two.
Other Sonoma/Napa Specialty Pickups:
- Artisanal cheeses from local cheese shops such as Fra’Mani Handcrafted Salumi or Gott’s Cheese & Charcuterie.
- Olive oils and vinegars from tasting rooms like Round Pond Estate or Stonehouse Olive Oil in Sonoma.
- Local honey or preserves from small boutiques and tasting rooms along the main roads.
Tips:
- Since you have limited time, plan your stops geographically to minimize driving: for example, hit Sonoma first for sparkling wine and local treats, then Napa if desired for more boutique selections.
- Call ahead to wineries or bakeries to check availability, especially for off-dry sparkling reds, which can be rare.
- Bring a cooler or insulated bag if you’re picking up pastries or wines that need to stay fresh for later consumption.
With these picks, you’ll be able to enjoy a taste of Napa and Sonoma while continuing your San Francisco vacation, capturing both the sparkling wine you love and delicious pastries that travel well.
