Payment options at casino

I am traveling to macau from India, and planning to visit the casinos.

I wanted to know if the casinos accept debit card to buy chips. And if not, what's the best place to exchange money and what are the payment options available for the exchange like credit/debit card

In Macau, casinos do not generally allow players to buy gaming chips directly with debit or credit cards. Gambling regulations require that chips be purchased only with cash, and most casinos strictly enforce this policy. You cannot swipe your card at a gaming table or cashier counter to obtain chips.

If you need local currency, the most practical approach is to withdraw cash from an ATM or exchange your money at an authorized currency exchange counter before entering the casino. Both Macau Pataca (MOP) and Hong Kong Dollar (HKD) are widely accepted within casinos, with HKD being more commonly used at gaming tables.

Here are your main options for obtaining cash or exchanging money:

  • ATM withdrawals: ATMs are widely available throughout Macau, including inside major casino resorts such as the Venetian, Wynn, Galaxy, and Grand Lisboa. You can use international debit or credit cards with Visa, MasterCard, or UnionPay logos. However, withdrawal limits and foreign transaction fees will apply.
  • Currency exchange counters: Exchange counters can be found at the airport, ferry terminals, large hotels, and casino lobbies. These counters offer competitive rates for major currencies like USD, EUR, INR, and HKD. Bring your passport for identification if exchanging large amounts.
  • Banks: Major banks such as Bank of China, ICBC, and HSBC Macau provide foreign exchange services during business hours. Banks generally offer the best official exchange rates but have longer queues and shorter operating hours compared to casino counters.

Accepted payment methods at exchange counters vary, but most prefer cash. Some may allow limited use of international credit or debit cards, though additional fees may apply. It’s best to bring cash (in INR, USD, or HKD) to exchange directly for MOP or HKD to avoid card surcharges.

Additional notes for travelers from India:

  • Notify your bank before traveling to ensure your debit or credit card works internationally.
  • Carry a backup card, as not all Indian cards are compatible with UnionPay or accepted at all ATMs.
  • Exchange a small amount at the airport if you need immediate cash for transport or tips, but save larger exchanges for Macau where rates are better.

In summary, casinos in Macau operate primarily on a cash-only basis for chip purchases. The best approach is to withdraw or exchange your money beforehand, preferably in Hong Kong Dollars, which are widely accepted and easier to manage within gaming areas.
