Traveling to HK and Macao

Hello there

I am visiting HK for 5 days and would like to squeeze in Macao during the trip. I would like to ask if it's best to spend a day in Macao or just to visit the city and leave at the end of the day back to HK?

In addition, do you all recommend taking the Ferry from HK to Macao? We have 3 adults with 4-5 luggage, are they allowed on the ferry to and from HK? And if we it's recommended to stay a night in Macao, which way is best back to HK Airport and we can just fly home from there.

Thank you in advance for answering my questions. It is our first family trip to HK we are very excited to visit HK and Macao.

Best

Visiting Macau from Hong Kong is quite feasible as a day trip, but whether to stay overnight depends on how relaxed you want your schedule to be. Macau is relatively compact, so you can see most main attractions in a single day, including the historic center, Senado Square, Ruins of St. Paul, and the Cotai Strip. However, if you want to enjoy the casinos, shows, or dine at specific restaurants, an overnight stay can make the experience more relaxed.

Regarding transportation:

  • The ferry is the most common and convenient way to travel between Hong Kong and Macau. High-speed ferries operate frequently from Hong Kong’s Macau Ferry Terminal in Sheung Wan and from the Hong Kong International Airport Skypier.
  • Yes, the ferry allows passengers with luggage, including your 4–5 pieces. Most ferries have designated luggage storage areas, and it is generally sufficient for medium-sized suitcases. You may want to check specific ferry operators for luggage limits if you have very large items.
  • The ferry ride usually takes about 55–60 minutes, depending on the service and weather conditions.

If you decide to stay overnight in Macau:

  • There are numerous hotels ranging from budget to luxury near the ferry terminals and Cotai Strip. Booking in advance is recommended, especially for weekends or holiday periods.
  • Returning to Hong Kong Airport for your flight is straightforward. You can take the ferry from Macau to the Hong Kong Airport Skypier if flying out from HK, which allows you to transfer directly to the airport without going through Hong Kong immigration.
  • Alternatively, you can return to Hong Kong city via ferry and then take the airport express or taxi to the airport if more convenient based on your flight timing.

In summary, a day trip to Macau is sufficient for a quick sightseeing tour. An overnight stay adds comfort and flexibility, especially if traveling with luggage and family. The ferry is suitable and convenient for both options.
