Taxi fare

Hey, could anyone give me a rough estimate please on the cost of a taxi from the Hong Kong border gate ( I’m flying into Hong Kong) to Hotel S ?

Also do I need to pay with MOP, HKD or will they accept card or contactless payment ? Thank you ☺️

Traveling from the Hong Kong–Macau border to your hotel in Macau is quite straightforward, but there are several important points to consider regarding taxi fares, payment methods, and alternatives. Since you mentioned flying into Hong Kong, the typical route would involve crossing the Hong Kong–Macau border via either the Hong Kong–Zhuhai–Macau Bridge (HZMB) or the ferry from Hong Kong International Airport or Sheung Wan to Macau. Once in Macau, you can take a local taxi to your hotel.

The taxi fare in Macau is regulated, and rates depend on the taxi type (standard, larger taxis, or vans) and distance traveled. Assuming you are crossing into Macau and heading to a hotel in the central area like Hotel S (likely in the Cotai or Macau Peninsula area), here is an estimate:

  • From Macau Border Checkpoint (Portas do Cerco) to central Macau (e.g., Hotel S near Senado Square or Macau Peninsula): approximately MOP 50–70 (around USD 6–9).
  • From the Macau side of the Hong Kong–Zhuhai–Macau Bridge (Macau Port) to central Macau hotels: approximately MOP 150–200 (around USD 18–25), due to the longer distance and bridge tolls.
  • If your hotel is in Cotai (near Venetian or City of Dreams), fares from the border checkpoint: approximately MOP 100–130 (around USD 12–16); from the bridge port: around MOP 200–250 (USD 25–31).

Taxi fares in Macau are usually paid in MOP (Macau Pataca), and drivers will generally not accept HKD at a favorable rate. Some taxis may accept HKD but at a fixed exchange rate which can be slightly higher. Most taxis in Macau do not accept credit cards or contactless payments, although some of the newer or larger taxi operators may support UnionPay or mobile payment methods like Alipay or WeChat Pay, but it is not guaranteed. Therefore, it is safest to carry MOP in cash when taking a taxi.

Additional tips for your trip:

  • Make sure to have small MOP notes or coins ready, as drivers may not provide change for large bills.
  • If arriving from Hong Kong International Airport, consider taking the shuttle bus or ferry to Macau first and then a taxi to your hotel, which may be more convenient than a long taxi ride across the border. Shuttle services often provide direct hotel drop-offs.
  • Some hotels in Macau offer pick-up services from major ports or terminals; checking with Hotel S in advance can save time and potentially reduce cost.
  • Rideshare apps are limited in Macau, so relying on official taxis is the most reliable option.

In summary, a typical taxi from the Macau border checkpoint to central Macau will cost around MOP 50–70, while from the bridge port it may be MOP 150–250 depending on your hotel location. Payment is primarily in MOP cash, with limited card or mobile payment acceptance.
