June trip to Avon/Beaver Creek

Will be taking our 78 year old mother to Colorado for her first time. We will fly from Texas into Denver and spend one night. Then we will drive to stay at Avon/Beaver Creek for 6 nights. Looking for things to do & see for someone with slight mobility issues. Willing to do day trips up to an hour or two away from Avon. Scenic drives, shopping, tours, any recommendations to make it a great trip and for to see the beauty of Colorado!

For your June trip to Avon/Beaver Creek with your 78-year-old mother, there are plenty of activities that are scenic, accessible, and enjoyable without requiring strenuous physical effort. The area offers a mix of natural beauty, charming towns, and relaxing experiences.

Since your first night is in Denver, you might consider a brief scenic stop downtown or a nice dinner near the airport. Then you’ll head west to Avon/Beaver Creek, which is about a 2-hour drive. This gives you flexibility to take in some mountain scenery along the way.

Once in Avon/Beaver Creek, here are recommended activities and experiences suitable for someone with slight mobility issues:

  • Scenic Drives: The drive along Vail Pass and over to Beaver Creek is spectacular. Consider drives to:
    • Glenwood Canyon via I-70 for dramatic canyon views
    • Vail Pass to Copper Mountain and Frisco for mountain vistas
    • Beaver Creek Village Loop – easy driving and beautiful mountain architecture
  • Beaver Creek Village: Explore the pedestrian-friendly village. You can enjoy the flower gardens, art installations, and window-shopping without needing to walk long distances.
  • Avon Town Center: Small shops, cafes, and a relaxed atmosphere. The Riverwalk area is especially nice for a gentle stroll along the river.
  • Scenic Gondola Rides: Take the Beaver Creek or Vail gondolas for panoramic mountain views. Both are very accessible for seniors and offer benches and shaded seating at the top.
  • Day Trips (within 1–2 hours):
    • Glenwood Springs: Famous for its hot springs and gentle riverwalk. There are accessible pools and spas.
    • Minturn or Red Cliff: Quaint towns with beautiful scenery and short walking areas.
    • Vail Village: Even if you’re staying in Avon/Beaver Creek, Vail is a short drive and has accessible paths, shopping, and dining.
  • Art & Culture: Check local schedules for art galleries, concerts, or theater performances in Beaver Creek Village. Many performances are wheelchair accessible and provide seating suitable for seniors.
  • Short Nature Walks: Choose flat, paved paths like:
    • Eagle River Trail near Avon – gentle walk along the river
    • Beaver Creek Riverwalk – flat, scenic, and easy on the legs
  • Relaxing Meals with Views: Many restaurants in Beaver Creek and Vail have patios overlooking mountains or rivers. Perfect for enjoying the scenery without walking far.

Tips to make the trip comfortable and enjoyable:

  • Consider renting a vehicle with comfortable seating and good suspension for mountain roads.
  • Plan early reservations for gondola rides or any guided tours to avoid waiting in lines.
  • Bring layers, even in June, as mountain mornings and evenings can be cool.
  • Break up driving with scenic stops, rest breaks, and photo opportunities along I-70 or the local mountain passes.

With this itinerary, your mother can enjoy the stunning Colorado mountains, charming villages, and relaxing activities without overexertion, making it a memorable and scenic trip.
