Tap or cash

It’s been quite a few years since our last visit, when we last visited tapping with a card or Apple Pay was not around , can I ask is it easier to use tap and pay or take mostly cash, I know I will definitely take cash for certain things but wondering if most malls/restaurants /garages and parks etc accept plastic . Just before I go and order my dollars from m&s.

Thank you for all answers

In recent years, using tap-to-pay options such as Apple Pay, Google Pay, and contactless cards has become quite common in the United States, especially in places like Orlando. Here’s a breakdown of how payment methods typically work in the area:

Tap-to-Pay (Card & Apple Pay):

For the most part, tap-to-pay methods (via cards or mobile apps like Apple Pay) are widely accepted at many establishments in Orlando, including:

  • Malls – Most shopping malls, like The Mall at Millenia and Disney Springs, accept tap-to-pay options.
  • Restaurants – Almost all restaurants, both quick-service and sit-down, accept plastic (credit/debit cards) and tap-to-pay services. Some high-end restaurants or smaller local spots may still prefer cash, but it’s increasingly rare.
  • Parking Garages – Many parking garages and lots, including those at theme parks and downtown areas, accept contactless payments, making it easy to tap your card or phone.
  • Theme Parks – Disney, Universal, and other theme parks generally accept tap-to-pay for entry, food, and merchandise. You can even link your park tickets and FastPasses to your credit card or Apple Pay for convenience.

Cash Usage:

While most places now accept credit cards, there are still some instances where cash might be useful:

  • Tips – Tipping in cash is common, especially for service staff (e.g., bellhops, restaurant servers, valet). Some people prefer to tip in cash rather than on a card to ensure the tip goes directly to the staff member.
  • Small Local Vendors – Some smaller shops, markets, or local vendors might still prefer or only accept cash, though this is becoming less common.
  • Public Transportation – If you’re using certain public transportation services, especially buses or older systems, cash might still be required. However, many systems have moved to cards or apps as well.

Advice:

While it’s always a good idea to have some cash on hand for tips or smaller purchases, you’ll find that most places in Orlando, including malls, restaurants, theme parks, and parking garages, accept tap-to-pay and card payments. It’s definitely more convenient to rely on plastic or mobile payments for most of your expenses, especially in a tourist-heavy area like Orlando.

For ordering your dollars in advance, you might want to get a small amount of cash, but you can usually withdraw more if needed while you're there. Keep in mind that ATMs are widely available in shopping centers, hotels, and tourist areas.

Have a great trip, and enjoy the convenience of tap-to-pay while you’re in Orlando!
