We are heading to Hong Kong in the next week.
We want to ensure we see pink dolphins.
I've been researching this found tours but wondered I can book it when I'm there so I can have more flexibility.
Two questions:
1. How often do tours depart?
2. Is it easy to get from the cable cars to a dolphin tour (or is there a tour that includes, the big Buddha, cable cars and pink dolphins)
Hong Kong is one of the few places in the world where you can spot the rare Indo-Pacific pink dolphins, locally known as Chinese white dolphins. These dolphins are usually seen around the waters of Lantau Island, particularly near Tai O fishing village and the northeast coast of Lantau.
Regarding your questions about tours and combining sightseeing with other attractions:
1. Tour Frequency:
Pink dolphin boat tours typically operate several times per day, depending on the company and season. In general, tours run every 1–2 hours during peak hours, often starting in the morning around 9:00–10:00 and continuing until late afternoon, around 16:00–17:00. Morning tours are often recommended because the water is calmer and dolphin sightings are more likely.
2. Combining Dolphin Tours with Big Buddha and Cable Cars:
The Big Buddha (Tian Tan Buddha) and Ngong Ping Cable Car are located at Ngong Ping on Lantau Island, while dolphin tours typically depart from Tai O or Ma Wan pier areas. Traveling between these locations can be done independently, but there is no standard public transport linking a cable car ride directly to a dolphin tour. Most tourists use private transfers or tour packages that combine both experiences.
Additional tips for dolphin spotting:
In summary, tours depart frequently throughout the day, but morning slots are preferable for better dolphin sightings. While there isn’t a direct connection from the cable cars to dolphin tours, private combined tours are available, and independent travel using buses is possible but requires planning. For maximum flexibility and comfort, a pre-booked tour that includes both Ngong Ping attractions and dolphin spotting is highly recommended.
