Beijing in wheelchair

I will be in Beijing for 6 days. I am a very slow walker, and also i geat tired very easily; so i will rent a wheechair or a mobility scooter. Because of my health condition, i think, private tours, will be better (my husband, also have mobility issues). Do you suggest any travel agency, that can provide such a service?

Traveling in Beijing with limited mobility is feasible, but planning ahead is essential. Renting a wheelchair or mobility scooter will help cover large areas, as many attractions involve significant walking. For private tours, specialized agencies can provide vehicles equipped for wheelchair access and guides experienced with mobility issues.

Suggested approach:

  • Contact travel agencies that specialize in accessible tourism in Beijing. They can arrange private cars with wheelchair access, pick-up/drop-off at your hotel, and guides familiar with less strenuous routes.
  • Ensure the agency can provide or help rent mobility aids, as some may offer scooters or powered wheelchairs for the duration of your stay.
  • Plan your itinerary to prioritize attractions with good accessibility: The Forbidden City has ramps and elevators in some sections, Temple of Heaven is mostly flat, Summer Palace has accessible paths along the lake, and the Great Wall sections like Mutianyu have cable cars and paths suitable for wheelchairs in parts.

Recommended agencies and services:

  • China Highlights: Offers private tours with customized itineraries and accessibility options, including wheelchair-friendly transportation.
  • Access China: Focuses on travelers with mobility challenges and can organize guides, vehicles, and accessible routes for Beijing.
  • Beijing Private Tour Operators on TripAdvisor or Viator: Filter by “accessible tours” to find private options with driver and guide support.

Additional tips:

  • Book tours and mobility aids in advance, especially during peak seasons.
  • Confirm with the agency which attractions have ramps, elevators, or other accessibility features.
  • Consider shorter daily itineraries with plenty of rest breaks to avoid fatigue.
  • Check hotel accessibility; many central Beijing hotels provide wheelchair ramps and elevators.

With careful planning, you and your husband can enjoy Beijing comfortably using a wheelchair or mobility scooter and private accessible tours.
