Suggestions for a ONE time surf lesson
Vacation to SD in July, staying in Mission Beach area. Teen granddaughter interested in A surf lesson. Finding a number of places offering lessons. Suggestions on which beach area (ie: Mission Beach, Pacific Beach, up in La Jolla etc) could provide her with a good 1st time surfing experience. We have no wet suits etc so the more equipment provided, would help.
For a first-time surfing experience in San Diego, especially in July when the water is generally warm, you have several great options near where you’re staying in Mission Beach. Since this is a one-time lesson and you don’t have wetsuits or equipment, choosing a beach with gentle waves, sandy bottoms, and full-service surf schools is key.
Here are some beach areas to consider:
- Mission Beach: This is ideal for beginners. The waves are typically small and gentle, especially near the Belmont Park area. There are many surf schools that provide boards, wetsuits if needed, and experienced instructors who specialize in first-timers. Its central location is convenient if you’re staying nearby.
- Pacific Beach: Just north of Mission Beach, Pacific Beach also offers beginner-friendly surf spots. The sandbars here help produce manageable waves for learners. There are several well-reviewed surf schools that provide full gear and lessons for teens.
- La Jolla Shores: A bit farther north (20–30 minutes by car), La Jolla Shores is one of the most popular beginner-friendly spots in San Diego County. The waves are soft, the beach is wide, and the water is generally calmer. Many lessons here include all equipment, and the area is picturesque, adding to the overall experience.
Other tips to ensure a smooth first lesson:
- Book in advance as July is peak season and spots fill quickly.
- Confirm the lesson includes surfboard, rash guard, and instructor guidance, as some schools provide wetsuits but others do not.
- Morning sessions are often better, as the wind is calmer and waves are more manageable.
- Consider a group lesson with just a few students for more personalized instruction.
Overall, staying close to Mission Beach or Pacific Beach is convenient for your lodging, while La Jolla Shores provides a slightly more scenic and calm environment for a first-time surfer. Any of these options with a reputable surf school should make for a fun, safe, and memorable experience for your granddaughter.
