Payments in China

Hi there, I have downloaded Alipay for payments in China as recommended but am worried about its security. When I bring it up there is a barcode and a QR code and it says Pay Vendor with the warning that sharing the numbers on the barcode will let others deduct money directly from my account and that it should only be used to show the cashier when making payments and to beware of fraud. I'm concerned that there is no other security and that anyone could see the barcode being flashed and take any amount of money from my linked account. Sorry but this doesn't seem at all secure! I have a Revolut card (virtual and on my phone) and there are various security features before it can be used (but not evidently in China). Can anyone advise? It's my first time in China and I will be alone for some of it and don't like to be suspicious but want to be careful!

Hello! Your concerns about Alipay’s security are understandable, especially as a first-time visitor using it in China. Here’s a detailed explanation to help you feel more confident and stay safe.

How Alipay works:

  • Alipay uses a QR code or barcode linked to your account to make payments. The cashier scans your code to deduct the amount from your linked payment method.
  • The warning about sharing the barcode is important: if someone else scans your code without your knowledge, they could potentially charge your account. This is why you should only show the barcode directly to the cashier.

Security tips when using Alipay:

  • Always use the Alipay app in a secure, private environment. Avoid showing your barcode in crowded or public settings where strangers could scan it.
  • Consider setting a payment password or using facial/fingerprint recognition within the app. Most Alipay accounts allow you to require authentication for each payment.
  • Do not save large balances in Alipay. Only top up the amount you expect to spend, minimizing potential losses in case of fraud.
  • Check your account regularly for any unusual transactions. Alipay usually notifies you immediately of any payment made.

Alternative payment options:

  • Use your Revolut card or other international cards where accepted. Many larger stores, restaurants, and hotels accept Visa, Mastercard, or UnionPay, but smaller vendors may prefer Alipay or WeChat Pay.
  • Consider a dual approach: small daily expenses on Alipay with strict security settings, and larger payments on your Revolut card.
  • If concerned, ask vendors if card payment is possible instead of showing your QR code. Many places will accept contactless or chip-and-pin payments.

General advice:

  • Keep your phone and app updated for the latest security features.
  • Do not lend your phone or Alipay account to anyone.
  • If you suspect any suspicious activity, freeze your account immediately through the app or contact Alipay support.

Overall, Alipay is widely used in China and considered secure when used properly. The key is to maintain situational awareness, use authentication features, and only show the barcode directly to trusted cashiers.
