Monument Valley

Hello,

during our trip, we're going to Monument Valley.

We'll arrive from Moab June 22 and we'll go to Page the day after. We'll sleep in the MV area. Do you suggest to visit the Monument Valley the arrival day or the day after? Do we have to pay any ticket for visiting the Monument Valley by car? Thanks

Monument Valley is an iconic destination and a highlight of any Southwest road trip. Since you’re arriving from Moab on June 22 and staying overnight in the Monument Valley area, you have a couple of options for timing your visit.

Visiting on the arrival day: If you arrive early enough from Moab, you can drive the scenic loop or take a short guided tour in the late afternoon. This timing is advantageous because the lighting for photography is often excellent in the late afternoon and early evening, with softer shadows and rich colors.

Visiting the next morning before heading to Page: Starting early in the morning allows you to enjoy cooler temperatures, fewer crowds, and the possibility of sunrise shots. Morning light can create dramatic contrasts and stunning views, making it ideal for photos. Since you are continuing to Page the next day, an early morning visit will let you experience Monument Valley without rushing.

  • If photography or scenic experience is a priority, consider the arrival day for late afternoon and/or the next morning for sunrise.
  • If you prefer a relaxed drive in daylight and to avoid long travel on arrival day, waiting until the morning of departure may be better.

Regarding fees:

  • Yes, there is an entrance fee for Monument Valley Navajo Tribal Park. For private vehicles driving the 17-mile scenic loop, the fee is typically per vehicle (as of 2025, around $20 per vehicle for the day), payable at the visitor center.
  • If you plan to take guided tours (jeep tours), those are extra and can provide access to areas of the park that are off-limits to self-driving visitors.
  • Simply driving the main loop without stopping is allowed, but most visitors stop at viewpoints along the way, which is included in the standard vehicle fee.

In summary, both the arrival day and the following morning are viable for visiting Monument Valley. Evening or early morning light is best for photos and the overall experience. You will need to pay the entrance fee whether you drive yourself or take a guided tour.
