Early morning biking

Hi all! Does anyone know a good place to rent bikes and go cycling early on a Sunday morning. (Like 7am) I will be with a family. Just average cyclers. Looking for an easy, relaxing ride. Ideally with little or no vehicle traffic. We are staying in the Mong Kok area.t Thanks for any suggestions!!

Hong Kong has several excellent cycling routes suitable for families and casual riders, and early morning is actually one of the best times to go — the air is fresher, temperatures are cooler, and roads are much quieter. While the Mong Kok area itself is very urban and not ideal for cycling, you can easily reach several scenic, family-friendly cycling trails within 30–45 minutes by MTR or taxi.

Here are some of the best options for early Sunday morning biking, including locations with easy bike rentals and minimal traffic:

  • Tai Wai to Tai Mei Tuk (New Territories) – This is one of Hong Kong’s most popular and scenic cycling routes. You can start at Tai Wai Station, rent bikes nearby, and cycle along dedicated bike paths through Sha Tin and Tai Po to Tai Mei Tuk, beside the Tolo Harbour. The route is flat, safe, and perfect for families. Many shops near Tai Wai open early, around 7–7:30 a.m.
  • Sha Tin Park Loop – If you prefer a shorter, easier option, you can cycle just around the Sha Tin area. Start from Sha Tin Park and follow the riverfront paths. It’s scenic, peaceful in the morning, and has several rest areas along the Shing Mun River.
  • Tseung Kwan O Waterfront Promenade – This modern seaside route is completely separated from traffic, offering smooth paths and ocean views. There are rental shops near the Tseung Kwan O MTR Station that open around 7 a.m. on weekends. Ideal for families looking for a short, relaxed ride.
  • Nam Sang Wai (Yuen Long) – A quieter countryside ride through wetlands and traditional villages. You can take the MTR to Yuen Long, rent bikes near the station, and ride along flat paths beside fish ponds and greenery. It’s calm and easy, though slightly farther from Mong Kok.

If you’re staying in Mong Kok, the fastest way to start your ride is to take the MTR early in the morning to one of these locations — Tai Wai or Sha Tin are the most convenient and family-friendly. Public transport allows bicycles (with front wheel removed) at that time, but since rental options are abundant, it’s easier to rent bikes on-site.

For a family ride at 7 a.m., Sha Tin or Tai Wai are your best choices. The area is open early, bike shops are nearby, and you’ll enjoy peaceful riverside views with little or no vehicle traffic.

In summary, for a relaxed family cycling trip from Mong Kok:

  • Take the MTR to Tai Wai early in the morning.
  • Rent bikes near the station (shops open around 7 a.m.).
  • Follow the riverside bike path toward Tai Po or stay within Sha Tin Park.
  • Return the bikes at the same shop or in Tai Po if one-way rental is available.

This route combines safety, accessibility, and great scenery — perfect for an early Sunday ride with the family.
