Shanghai Disney with young children - 1.5 days or 2 days?

Hi, my 2 boys will be 4 and 6 at the time of our visit. They are not thrill seekers so will only be interested in the mild rides but will want to see the shows and parades.

We will be flying in from HK on Sunday 26th Oct and the plan right now is to stay 1 night at the Disney Hotel and make Monday 27th Oct our main day at the park. My kids don't have much stamina so I doubt we'll take advantage of early entry so I was wondering if it might be worth buying half day entry on Sunday 26th Oct upon arrival. My worries are that given it's a Sunday, it might be super busy in the afternoon and also that all the DPAs/priority for shows might have sold out by then. Do you think it's worth it to enter the park late afternoon on a Sunday?

I would like to avoid staying 2 nights at the Disney Hotel so the other option I was considering was paying for 2 days access and commuting in from Shanghai centre but arriving after the morning rush on each day i.e. arrive at 9am or 9.30am.

Any advice would be much appreciated. This is our first visit to any Disney park and my main aim is for my kids to enjoy it rather than rushing them around to see everything and making them really tired. Thanks!

Shanghai Disney with young children can be a magical experience, but planning is key to make it enjoyable without exhausting the kids. Since your boys are 4 and 6 and are not thrill seekers, your focus will naturally be on mild rides, character meet-and-greets, shows, and parades rather than the high-intensity attractions.

Given your travel plan, you have two main options for visiting the park:

  • Arrive Sunday afternoon (26th Oct) for a half-day entry at Disney Hotel.
  • Skip Sunday entry and spend a full day Monday (27th Oct) with either one-day or two-day tickets, commuting from central Shanghai.

Here are some factors to consider for Sunday afternoon entry:

  • Disney parks are typically very busy on weekends, so arriving in the afternoon means you might face long queues even for the mild rides.
  • Priority access for shows (like the Disney Play Access / DPA system) might already be fully booked by the afternoon, limiting your ability to catch popular shows.
  • The kids may be tired from traveling, especially if your flight arrives in the afternoon, which could reduce enjoyment.
  • However, you might enjoy the park’s atmosphere, walk around, and take photos, which could be a gentle introduction before the main day.

If you choose to skip Sunday and do Monday only:

  • Arriving around 9:00-9:30am still gives you a full day without having to wake up extremely early.
  • It allows you to focus on the attractions and shows that your kids will enjoy without rushing through the park.
  • Commuting from central Shanghai is straightforward, especially with the metro to the Disney Resort line.
  • One full day should be sufficient for young children to experience the highlights, see parades, and enjoy mild rides at a comfortable pace.

Buying two-day tickets and commuting from Shanghai center is also an option if you want more flexibility, but with young children who have limited stamina, one well-planned full day at the park is usually enough. Adding a short Sunday visit might be tempting, but it could end up being less enjoyable due to crowds, limited DPA slots, and tired kids.

In summary, for your situation:

  • Prioritize one full day (Monday) to ensure the kids enjoy the experience fully.
  • If you want a more relaxed start, skip Sunday half-day entry.
  • Focus on the mild rides, shows, and parades rather than trying to see everything.
  • Consider using the Disney Play Access app early in the day to secure show times.
  • Bring snacks, water, and plan rest breaks to keep the kids comfortable.

This approach balances enjoyment with minimal fatigue, giving your boys a memorable first Disney experience without feeling rushed.
