Clarification regarding getting around

Hi.

So I’m only going to be in HK for 2 nights soon. Just so I’m clear I can pay for the MRT travel with my contactless (uk chase Mastercard) right? Not sure I want to be faffing with the octopus card for just 2 nights especially given that I can’t get the app on my phone to top up, and I’m also trying my hardest to not pull out any cash.

On a side note, is the ibis central & Sheung wan, iClub AMTD and iClub sheung wan all within a 10 minute walk from the ferry terminal? It’s showing up as all under 10 mins walking but the apple map is also known to show the most silly routes at times

Many thanks in advance.

Yes, you can generally use a contactless UK-issued Mastercard (like your Chase card) to pay directly for most rides on the Hong Kong MTR. The system accepts international contactless cards at entry and exit gates, so you do not strictly need an Octopus card for just two nights. Keep in mind, though, that using a contactless card may not give you the same fare discounts that the Octopus card offers, but for a short trip it’s perfectly convenient.

Regarding cash, most MTR stations, buses, and trams accept Octopus, contactless cards, or mobile payments, so you can avoid cash entirely. However, some small vendors, especially in markets or street food stalls, may still require cash.

About the hotels and proximity to the ferry terminal:

  • Ibis Central & Sheung Wan: Approximately 8–10 minutes’ walk from the Hong Kong–Macau ferry terminal (Shun Tak Centre). Depending on walking speed and luggage, it may take slightly longer.
  • iClub AMTD: Roughly a 10-minute walk. The route is straightforward but may involve crossing streets and using pedestrian bridges.
  • iClub Sheung Wan: Also within 8–10 minutes’ walking distance. Apple Maps is generally accurate, but sometimes suggests longer walking paths; the most direct route may be a bit quicker than the map shows.

Tips:

  • If you have luggage, consider the walking time plus waiting at crossings; it might add a few minutes.
  • Use Google Maps or Citymapper as a backup; they often show slightly more optimized walking routes than Apple Maps in HK.
  • For convenience, using your contactless Mastercard on the MTR for a 2-night stay is easier than purchasing and topping up an Octopus card.

In summary, your plan to use a contactless Mastercard for MRT travel is viable, and all three hotels are indeed within roughly a 10-minute walk from the ferry terminal, though actual walking time may vary slightly depending on your pace and luggage.
