Hi, we are visiting Yosemite NP for the first time in first week of July, road tripping from Las Vegas. We have our hotel booked at Oakhurst as a base for our 3 day visit. I have several random questions and I wasn't able to find concrete info for those. any pointers/tips would be really helpful.
1. Not really sure why Google Maps shows Tuolumne Meadows Visitor Center as Temporarily Closed. Even if visitor center is closed, I am assuming the east entrance is still open.
2. I am hoping we can enter NP from the east thru Tuolumne Meadows/Tioga Pass road and then drive our way inwards to get to famous attractions (El Capitan, Yosemite Falls, Tunnel view etc.), stopping at Yosemite Valley Welcome Center & then exit the park thru South Exit to Oakhurst hotel.
3. are there any benefits in making this drive clockwise vs. counterclock wise? In other words, instead of an arrival day (weekday) we can also do this drive on our departure day (weekend) back to Vegas
4. Is Mariposa Grove of Giant Sequoias inside the Yosemite NP? We have a 3 day reservation to enter the park, so would need to plan accordingly
5. Yosemite Mountain Sugar Pine Railroad: I understand its subjective, but any recommendations if this is worth visiting (we have kids in our group) by carving some time away from NP itself?
Thanks in advance!
Visiting Yosemite for the first time is exciting! With 3 days based in Oakhurst, you have a great base for exploring Yosemite Valley, Mariposa Grove, and even venturing up to Tuolumne Meadows if the roads are open. Here are detailed pointers for your questions.
1. Tuolumne Meadows Visitor Center & East Entrance:
Tuolumne Meadows Visitor Center may show as “temporarily closed” due to staffing or seasonal schedules, but the Tioga Pass Road and east entrance typically remain open in early July. Do note that Tioga Pass (Highway 120 east) opens around late May to early June depending on snow, so it should be open in July. Always check the official NPS Yosemite road conditions before travel.
2. Entering via East, exiting South (Oakhurst):
Yes, you can enter via Tioga Pass and drive westward into Yosemite Valley. This route gives you a scenic drive through high alpine meadows and lakes before descending into the valley. Stopping at the Yosemite Valley Welcome Center is a good idea to orient yourselves, get maps, and learn about hiking options.
3. Clockwise vs. Counter-Clockwise Drive:
Both directions work, but considerations include:
4. Mariposa Grove:
Yes, Mariposa Grove of Giant Sequoias is inside Yosemite National Park near the South Entrance. Since you have 3-day park reservations, plan at least half a day to visit the grove, especially if you want to do the Big Trees Trail or Grizzly Giant loop. Shuttle service is available from the Welcome Plaza if you prefer not to walk the entire way from the parking area.
5. Yosemite Mountain Sugar Pine Railroad:
This is located just outside Yosemite, near Fish Camp, south of the park. It’s a kid-friendly historic steam train ride through forested scenery. If your group enjoys trains and a fun, relaxed activity, it’s a worthwhile diversion and can be combined with your drive from Oakhurst to the park or on your departure day. Plan 2-3 hours for the visit.
Additional Tips:
With careful planning, your East entrance loop, valley highlights, Mariposa Grove, and a Sugar Pine Railroad visit are all feasible in your 3-day window. Prioritize the valley and groves, and use Tioga Pass as a scenic bonus.
