Are the fires impacting YNP?

Hello, I’ll be out there in less than two weeks. While I realize things can change rapidly, I am wondering if the fires outside the Park are currently impacting travel in or out of the park or if the smoke is impairing any of the lovely views. Many thanks.

Great question. Short answer: yes — fires are affecting Yosemite currently, and you should be prepared for potential smoke, reduced visibility, and some travel impacts. But with the right planning, it’s still possible to enjoy many parts of the park.

Here’s what we know and what to watch out for:

  • Current Fire Status: According to the National Park Service, most fire activity in Yosemite is under control. As of September 16, 2025, the “Kibbie” fire (north of Hetch Hetchy) is 100% contained, and the “Breeze” fire nearby is only 5% contained, but no major trail closures are reported.
  • Smoke and Air Quality: Smoke is a concern. Yosemite monitors fine particulate matter (PM2.5), which can impair visibility and affect health, especially for sensitive individuals. The NPS encourages checking current air quality readings before and during your visit.
  • Travel Impacts: Most major roads in the park remain open. According to NPS current conditions: Valley roads are open; Glacier Point Road and Tioga Road may be closed or have seasonal restrictions. However, some routes outside the park may be impacted: community reports note that Highway 120 (a common access route) has been affected by nearby wildfire activity.
  • Health Recommendations: Park authorities advise caution if smoke levels are high. They suggest bringing N95 masks if you’re sensitive to smoke or plan to hike. Also, minimizing strenuous activity during periods of poor air quality is wise.

What you can do as a visitor:

  • Check live air quality before heading out each day. Use NPS’s smoke monitoring tools or reliable third-party apps.
  • Be flexible in your plans: if visibility is poor, prioritize lower-risk activities like scenic drives or easy valley walks rather than long hikes.
  • Consider timing your outdoor activity when smoke is lighter (often mid-day, depending on wind) to maximize visibility.
  • If you have respiratory issues, children, or sensitive health conditions, bring masks or limit time outdoors when AQI is elevated.

Bottom Line: Yes, smoke from nearby fire activity is currently impacting parts of Yosemite. While it may impair some views or make outdoor activity less comfortable, the park remains open, and many popular sites are still accessible. With careful planning and awareness, you should be able to enjoy your trip — just be prepared for the possibility of haze or air quality concerns.
