High speed train

Hello I am thinking of booking high speed train 2nd class from X Ian to Guangzhou in September my first time - how the legroom and luggage storage-as the ride is over 8 hours or so, can one stretch and walk up and down aisle like on the plane - would like to hear your experience on HST Thanks

Taking the high-speed train (HST) from Xi’an to Guangzhou is a comfortable and efficient way to travel across such a long distance. Here’s what you can generally expect for 2nd class tickets:

Legroom and Seating:

  • 2nd class seats are arranged in a 3+2 layout per row, similar to economy on airplanes but slightly more spacious in terms of pitch.
  • Legroom is reasonable for an 8+ hour journey, though taller passengers may find it a bit tight compared to first class. You can stretch by raising your feet slightly or using the footrest if available.
  • Seats recline, but not fully flat. The seat padding is comfortable enough for a long ride.

Luggage Storage:

  • There is space above the seats for small to medium-sized bags.
  • For larger suitcases, most trains have dedicated luggage racks at the end of each carriage. Make sure to arrive a bit early to secure a spot for big luggage.
  • It’s common for passengers to also place smaller bags under the seat in front of them.

Moving Around:

  • Passengers are allowed to walk up and down the aisle freely, just like on a plane, which helps to stretch your legs on a long trip.
  • There is a service area with a small cafe/bar at the end of some carriages where you can get snacks and drinks.
  • Restrooms are available at both ends of each carriage; they are clean and functional.

Other Tips:

  • Bring some snacks and water for the long ride, though trolleys sell drinks and simple meals.
  • Download a train app or have your ticket info handy; staff may check your ticket multiple times during the journey.
  • If you prefer extra comfort and more space, 1st class is worth considering, especially for an 8+ hour ride.

Overall, traveling 2nd class on Chinese high-speed trains is convenient and comfortable. Walking in the aisles and reclining a bit helps manage the long journey. Many travelers find it smoother and more relaxing than long-distance bus travel, and punctuality is excellent.
