Encinitas or Solana Beach as a home base
At the end August we are dropping our daughter off at college in Claremont CA then driving to San Diego area to check out the University of San Diego for our other daughter.
We are thinking of renting an airbnb in Encinitas or Solana Beach for 3 days. We love small California towns like Ojai and Carpinteria. Would either of these towns be a good home base? When I check distance time from locations to university it states around 30 minutes. Is this accurate or can traffic be horrendous? We will arrive on a Sunday and then fly out of San Diego on a Wednesday around 11 am
Itinerary ideas
Visit University of San Diego then explore little Italy area of San Diego
Explore Botanical gardens and or Self realization gardens
Explore beaches- Moonlight Beach , Solana Beach
Thank you
Both Encinitas and Solana Beach are charming small coastal towns in North County San Diego and can make a pleasant base for a few days. They each have a relaxed, small-town California vibe with beaches, boutiques, and good restaurants, similar in spirit to Ojai or Carpinteria.
Location and commuting:
- Encinitas is slightly farther north than Solana Beach, but the drive to the University of San Diego is similar for both, roughly 25–35 minutes under normal traffic. However, late afternoon traffic, especially on I-5 south, can be heavy and extend the drive to 45–50 minutes.
- Solana Beach is slightly closer to downtown San Diego and may have a small edge in reducing commute time to USD and the Little Italy area.
- Both towns are good if you want to enjoy the North County beaches and smaller town feel, but if minimizing drive time is a priority, Solana Beach might be slightly better.
Things to do from either base:
- University of San Diego: Plan at least a couple of hours to tour the campus. From either Encinitas or Solana Beach, allow 30–45 minutes depending on traffic.
- Beaches: Moonlight Beach (Encinitas) is a great family-friendly option with facilities and parking. Solana Beach itself has tide pools and a nice boardwalk, ideal for a stroll or sunset views.
- Gardens: Self-Realization Fellowship Gardens in Encinitas are beautiful for a calm, reflective visit. San Diego Botanic Garden in Encinitas is also lovely and offers more walking trails and plant diversity.
- Downtown San Diego: Little Italy, Seaport Village, and the Embarcadero are easily accessible from either town. Expect a 25–40 minute drive depending on traffic.
Additional tips:
- Arriving on a Sunday is ideal as traffic is lighter. Morning drives to USD and downtown will generally be smoother than late afternoon or early evening.
- For exploring the beaches, consider checking tide schedules if you want to see tide pools or enjoy swimming safely.
- If you enjoy biking, both towns have bike paths along the coast, which is a fun way to explore without worrying about parking.
Overall, both Encinitas and Solana Beach offer a relaxing, scenic base for your San Diego visit. Solana Beach is slightly closer to downtown and USD, while Encinitas gives you more options for gardens and a larger beach scene. Either choice will give you a nice blend of small-town charm and access to San Diego highlights.
