Entry permit of Hong Kong SAR of PRC (question)

Hi,

I have been issued the “entry permit of Hong Kong SAR of PRC”. It’s the sticker they put in your Chinese passport. I am wondering if I can use this entry permit to enter Hong Kong from anywhere in the world?

I have a Canadian permanent resident card and a Chinese passport, and I intend to enter Hong Kong from Japan, so can I use this entry permit to enter Hong Kong from Japan? I am concerned about whether or not there is a rule out there stating that you can only use it to enter Hong Kong from a specific country, like from the country you have a PR card in.

The “Entry Permit of Hong Kong SAR of PRC” issued in your Chinese passport is generally intended for Chinese citizens to enter Hong Kong. It is not tied to your place of residence or Canadian PR status—it is primarily based on your Chinese nationality.

Using the entry permit from any country:

  • You can typically use this entry permit to enter Hong Kong from any country, including Japan. There is no rule restricting entry to only the country where you hold a PR card or citizenship other than Chinese.
  • The key requirement is that you hold a valid Chinese passport and the entry permit sticker is valid for your intended stay in Hong Kong.
  • Make sure your entry permit has not expired and the duration of stay indicated matches your travel plans.

Important considerations:

  • Immigration officers at the Hong Kong border may ask for proof of onward travel or accommodation, so carry your flight tickets and hotel bookings.
  • Having a Canadian PR card does not affect your ability to use the entry permit; it’s supplementary documentation and can serve to show your international travel history if requested.
  • Always double-check that your passport and entry permit are in good condition, and the personal information matches exactly.

In short, you can use the Hong Kong SAR entry permit to enter from Japan or any other country. There is no restriction linking it to a specific country of departure. Just ensure your documents are valid and comply with the permitted stay duration.
