Lions Rock or Dragons Back, or something else?
Hello all,
We are a fit 40 year old couple, looking to do a hike early in the morning our second day in Hong Kong early October (will do the Victoria Peak loop after arrival). We are staying in central, and hoping for great views, nature, and something that is not overly crowded/paved, an actual hike. I was sold on Lions Head, but my wife mentioned Dragons Back. Hoping for something where we can be done before noon (we are quick hikers fyi).
Note: We live in the Canadian Rockies, so any hike technically will be fine. We are also used to high humidity... we hike many peaks around the world in tropic destinations.
Thanks for any advice on this.
For a morning hike in Hong Kong that offers real hiking experience, nature, and great views, both Lion Rock and Dragon’s Back are excellent options, but they cater to slightly different experiences and logistics. Since you are staying in Central and want to finish before noon, here’s a detailed comparison and suggestions:
Lion Rock:
- Distance & Duration: Approximately 4–5 km round trip, taking 2–3 hours for fit hikers. Steep sections near the top provide a good workout.
- Views & Experience: Iconic panoramic views over Kowloon and Hong Kong skyline. The hike is rugged and less paved, with rock scrambles near the summit.
- Access: From Wong Tai Sin or Diamond Hill MTR station, you can reach the trailhead in 15–20 minutes via short bus/taxi.
- Crowds: Less crowded than Dragon’s Back in the morning, especially on weekdays. Summit can get busier mid-morning.
Dragon’s Back:
- Distance & Duration: About 8.5 km one-way from Shek O Road to Big Wave Bay; can take 2–3 hours for quick hikers.
- Views & Experience: Coastal ridge hike with dramatic sea views, lush greenery, and undulating ridges. Less steep rock scrambles than Lion Rock, more rolling trail.
- Access: From Shau Kei Wan MTR, take a short minibus/bus to the trailhead. The end point is at Big Wave Bay, where you can relax or take a taxi back to Central.
- Crowds: Very popular, especially on weekends, but starting early (around 7–8 am) can help avoid most of the crowds.
Other Alternatives:
- Tai Tam Reservoirs Circular Walk: Easy to moderate hike, scenic water views, lush forest, less crowded, ~2–3 hours.
- Mount Butler Trail: Steep, rugged, excellent views over Victoria Harbour and Sai Wan Reservoir, less crowded than Lion Rock or Dragon’s Back.
- Sunset Peak (Lantau Island): Longer hike, but if you start very early, you can do a shorter section with impressive ridgeline views.
Recommendation for Your Goals:
- If you want a rugged, challenging hike with dramatic skyline views and minimal walking distance, go for Lion Rock. It’s close to Central and doable before noon.
- If you prefer a scenic coastal ridge with rolling terrain and don’t mind a slightly longer hike, Dragon’s Back is ideal. Start very early to avoid mid-morning crowds.
- Both hikes offer authentic Hong Kong hiking experiences, with Dragon’s Back being more famous for tourists and Lion Rock more local and iconic for city views.
Since you are experienced hikers from the Canadian Rockies and comfortable with humidity, either option will provide a satisfying morning adventure with stunning vistas. Starting at 7 am ensures you finish before noon and avoid peak crowds.
