Memorial weekend which hotel & padres game?

We are going to be stopping just for 1 night which is the Saturday of memorial weekend, am looking at either Hilton bay front or the west gate hotel, which would be best & why? It would be just me & hubby stopping, and would any one know if they would be a game that day? Thank you x

Great questions! Here’s a breakdown of considerations for your Memorial Weekend stay in San Diego, plus what the Padres schedule looks like and which hotel might suit you best.

1. Will there likely be a Padres game that Saturday?

Based on the 2025 Padres schedule, there is no home game on Memorial Weekend Saturday. Their Memorial Day game is on Monday, May 26, 2025, versus the Miami Marlins. The schedule confirms that the Saturday of that weekend (May 31) is a home game, but in 2025 it’s the Pittsburgh Pirates that the Padres host on Saturday, May 31.

2. Comparing the Two Hotels – Hilton Bayfront vs. Westgate Hotel:

  • Hilton San Diego Bayfront
    • Location: Very close to Petco Park — about a 10-minute walk via a pedestrian bridge to the stadium’s home-plate gate.
    • Parking: It has a large hotel garage, which is convenient for game days or downtown exploring.
    • Vibe: Waterfront hotel in the Marina/Convention Center area; very comfortable, scenic, and well suited for couples.
    • Advantages: Excellent location if you decide to walk to anything downtown (Gaslamp, Seaport, Petco), relaxing views, good for a mix of sightseeing + a possible ballpark day in the future.
    • Trade-offs: Because it’s so convenient, nightly rates and garage parking can be more expensive.
  • Westgate Hotel
    • Location: More centrally placed in Downtown / Gaslamp Quarter, so very close to restaurants, nightlife, and attractions.
    • Vibe: Classic boutique luxury; very refined, quieter than some of the big waterfront hotels.
    • Advantages: Great for a one-night stay if you want to soak in downtown’s character, walk to dinner or bars in the Gaslamp, and minimize travel.
    • Trade-offs: Parking in downtown can be challenging and expensive; not as close to Petco Park as Bayfront unless you're okay walking or grabbing a ride.

3. Which hotel might be “best” for you + your husband stopping for one night?

Given that you’re just there one night and want a comfortable, memorable stay: Hilton Bayfront is likely the better choice if you value easy access to the water, a relaxing ambiance, and a possible future game-day walk to Petco. Westgate may feel more “city-chic” and is perfect if you want to experience the Gaslamp nightlife or a more boutique-style downtown stay.

4. Final thoughts:

  • Since there’s not a Padres game on the actual Memorial Weekend Saturday in 2025, you’re less constrained by needing immediate stadium access that night.
  • If budget allows, Bayfront provides more “destination” feel and flexibility; Westgate is great for walking, dining, and a stylish downtown stay.
  • Consider where you’ll want to eat, walk, and relax in the evening — waterfront or downtown — and choose accordingly.
